THE COMPUTER

A computer is a type of electronic device that manipulates information, also known as "data." It has
the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. A computer can be used to type documents, send
emails, and browse the internet. It can also handle spreadsheets, accounting, database management,
presentations, games, and other tasks.

Visiting to an electronics store can be a bit of a mystery, not to mention overwhelming, for
inexperienced computer users. Computers, on the other hand, aren't all that mysterious. All types of
computers are made up of two basic components, namely:

1. Hardware - is any part of your computer that has a physical structure, such as the
computer monitor or keyboard.

Image 1.1 From left to right, AVR, camera, keyboard, mouse, headset and system unit are examples
of hardware.
2. Software - is any set of instructions that tell the hardware what to do. It is what guides the
hardware and tells it how to accomplish each task. Some examples of software are web
browsers, games, and word processors such as Microsoft Word.

Image 1.2 Microsoft Office Word Image Source: Personal screen shot of the writer.

The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was the first electronic
computer developed in 1946. It was 1,800 square feet in size and weighed 30 tons.
What are the different types of computers?
When most people hear the word "computer" they think of a personal computer such as a
desktop or laptop computer. However, computers come in many shapes and sizes, and they perform
many different functions in our daily lives. When you withdraw cash from an ATM, scan groceries
at the store, or use a calculator, you're using a type of computer.

 Desktop Computers
Desktop computers are made to be used at a desk or
table. They tend to be larger and more powerful than
other types of personal computers. Desktop computers
are made up of various parts. The system unit, or main
component, is typically a rectangular case that sits on or
beneath a desk. The system unit is linked to other
components such as the monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

content.com/.image/t_share/MTc0NDY0NTMyOTQzNDgwNDU0/buying-your-first-desktop-
computer.jpg

 Laptop

Is battery or AC-powered personal computer that

are more portable than desktop computers, allowing
you to use them almost anywhere.

Since a laptop is smaller than a desktop, it's more difficult

to access the internal components. That means you may
not be able to upgrade them as much as a desktop.
However, it is usually possible to add more Random
Access Memory (RAM) or a bigger hard drive.
Image 1.4 Laptop. Image Source: https://images.icecat.biz/img/gallery/85989177_4277406708.jpg

 Server
Is a computer that "serves up" information to
other computers on a network

Image 1.5 Server. Image Source:

https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/introduction-of-server/

Servers are dedicated computers for a specific purpose, and

unlike desktop computers, these computers are designed for
durability, longevity, and longer periods of operation than a desktop PC. Servers play an important role
in the operation of the internet because they are where web pages are stored. A web server delivers the
page you requested when you use your browser to click a link.
OTHER TYPES OF COMPUTERS
There are many everyday devices that are essentially specialized computers, even if we don't
always think of them as computers. Here are a few typical examples:
Tablet Computers: These use a touch-sensitive screen for typing and
navigation. Since they don't require a keyboard or mouse, tablet
computers are even more portable than laptops. The iPad is an example
of a tablet computer.

Mobile Phones: Many mobile phones can perform many of the functions of a computer,
such as browsing the internet or playing games. These devices are frequently referred to
as smartphones.

Game Consoles: A game console is a type of computer that is specifically designed for
playing video games. Although not as powerful as a desktop computer, many newer
consoles, such as the Nintendo Wii, allow you to perform non-gaming tasks such as web
browsing.

Smart TV: Many TV Display now include applications (or

apps) that let you access various types of online content. For
example, you can view your Facebook news feed or watch
streaming movies on Netflix.

Two Main Style of Personal Computer (PC)

Personal computers are classified into two "styles": PC and Mac. Both styles are fully functional, but
they have a distinct look and feel that many people prefer.

PC: The original IBM PC, introduced in 1981, was the

first of this type of computer. Other companies began to
produce similar computers, which were known as IBM
PC Compatible (often abbreviated to PC). Today, this is
the most common type of personal computer, and it
usually includes the Microsoft operating system.

Image 1.10 IBM PC. Image Source:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Personal_Computer_XT

Mac: The Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984, and it

was the first widely sold personal computer with a Graphical
User Interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey). All Macs are made
by one company, Apple Inc., and they almost always use the
Mac OS X operating system.

Although the term PC can refer to an IBM PC Compatible, it can also refer to any personal computer,
including Macs.

BASIC PARTS OF COMPUTER

 System Unit
A system unit is a component of a computer that houses the primary devices that perform
operations and generate results for complex calculations. It consists of the motherboard, CPU, RAM,
and other components, as well as the case that houses these devices. This unit handles the vast
majority of the tasks that a computer must perform.
Image 1.12 System Unit. Image Source: https://turbofuture.com/computers/Components-of-Computer

The term system unit is generally used to differentiate between the computer itself and its
peripheral devices, such as the keyboard, mouse and monitor. A system unit is also known as a
chassis or a tower in layman's terms.

 The Mouse
A mouse, also known as a pointer, is a hand-operated input device that is used
to manipulate objects on a computer screen. A movement detected by the mouse,
whether it is a laser or a ball, wired or wireless, sends instructions to the computer to
move the cursor on the screen in order to interact with files, windows, and other
software elements.

Image 1.13a Computer Mouse. Image Source: https://www.thermaltake.com/level-20-rgb-gaming-

Douglas Engelbart (see biography of Douglas Engelbart),

then Director of Augmentation Research Center (ARC) at
Stanford Research Institute (SRI), in Menlo Park, California,
invented the first computer mouse in the early 1960s.

Image 1.13b Computer Mouse. Image Source: https://www.i-

pathways.org/public/images/content/digitalLiteracy/mouse_labeled.jpg
 The Monitor

A monitor, also known as a VDT (video display terminal) or

VDU (video display unit), is an output device that displays
video images and text.

A monitor consists of circuitry, a screen, a power supply,

buttons for adjusting screen settings, and a casing that houses
all of these components.

Image 1.14 Computer Monitor. Image Source:

https://sea.pcmag.com/monitors/42987/philips-brilliance-279p1

The first computer monitor was part of the Xerox Alto computer system, which was released on
March 1, 1973.

 Keyboard

Image 1.15a Computer Keyboard. Image Source: https://www.amazon.com/V7-Standard-Full-Size-Resistant-

KC0A1-4N6P/dp/B005Y0G9ME

The keyboard is a piece of computer hardware that allows you to enter text, characters, and
other commands into a computer or similar device. Even though the keyboard is an external
peripheral device in a desktop system (it is located outside the main computer housing) or "virtual" in
a tablet PC, it is an essential component of the entire computer system.
Modern computer keyboards were modeled after, and still look a lot like, typewriter
keyboards. Many different keyboard layouts (such as Dvorak and JCUKEN) are available around the
world, but most English language keyboards are of the QWERTY variety. Other languages' default
keyboard layouts differ, such as QWERTZ for German and AZERT for French.

Based on their function, the keys on your keyboard can be divided into several groups:

keyboard-18b2efc1-9e32-ba5a-0896-676f9f3b994f

Control Keys. These keys are used to perform specific actions either alone or in conjunction
with other keys. Ctrl, Alt, and the Windows logo key are the most frequently used control
keys. A screenshot of the Windows logo key and the Esc key.
Funtion Keys. Function keys are used to carry out specific tasks. They are labeled F1, F2, F3,
and so on, all the way up to F12. The functionality of these keys varies depending on the
program.
Typing (alphanumeric) Keys. These keys have the same letter, number, punctuation, and
symbol keys as a standard typewriter.
Navigation Keys. These keys are used to navigate through documents or webpages and to edit
text. The arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, Delete, and Insert are among them.
Numeric Keypad. The numeric keypad is useful for quickly entering numbers. The keys are
arranged in a block, much like a traditional calculator or adding machine.
Indicator Lights. An indicator is a light or LED that prompts the user to the status of a hardware
device.

NOTES
:
The keyboard has three technology-supported ports: USB, PS2, and wireless.
Specialized keyboard keys necessitate the use of specialized drivers. Those specialized keys
will not function until you install the keyboard's included software.
Wireless keyboards have no cords, which makes for a neater desktop.
Most are made up of two parts: the keyboard and a receiving unit that plugs into the USB
port on your computer. Regrettably, they are battery dependent.
 Optical Drive

An Optical Drive refers to a computer system that allows

users to use DVDs, CDs and Blu-ray optical drives. The
Drive contains some lenses that project electromagnetic
waves that are responsible for reading and writing data on
Image 1.16 Optical Drive. Image Source: optical discs. Nowadays Optical drives are become less
https://www.cleverfiles.com/howto/what-is-
optical-drive.html common due to the revolution of better data management
systems and storage devices.

 Random Access Memory (RAM)

RAM (random-access memory) is a
hardware device that allows
information to be stored and retrieved
on a computer. It is also known as main
memory, primary memory, or system
memory.

RAM is commonly associated with

DRAM, a type of memory module.
Image 1.17 RAM. Image Source:

tm

 Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU (pronounced sea-pea-you) is the computer's central

processing unit. It is also known as a processor, central
processor, or microprocessor. The CPU of a computer handles
all instructions received from the computer's hardware and
software.

As an example, the CPU processed the instructions to open

Image 1.18 CPU. Image Source: and display this web page on your computer using a web
https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/c/c
pu.htm browser.

The CPU is often referred to as the brain of the computer.

However, it is more appropriate to refer to software as the brain and the CPU as a very efficient
calculator. A CPU is really good with numbers, but if it wasn't for the software it wouldn't know how
to do anything else.

 Power Supply Unit (PSU)

A power supply unit (PSU) converts mains AC to low-
voltage regulated DC power for a computer's internal
components.

They also send a signal tohttp://www.personal.psu.edu/users/d/l/dlm99/pow
the motherboard to indicate

when the DC voltages are within specifications,
allowing the computer to safely power up and boot.

 Speaker

A computer speaker is a piece of output hardware that

connects to a computer to produce sound. The computer's
sound card generates the signal used to produce the
sound that comes from a computer speaker.

system-with-subwoofer-i1841233241.html

 Modem
Modem is
short for

Image 1.21 Computer Modem. Image Source: "Modulator-Demodulator". It is a hardware component

https://www.istockphoto.com/search/2/image?
phrase=modem that allows a computer or another device, such as a
router or switch, to connect to the Internet. It converts
or "modulates" an analog signal from a telephone or
cable wire to digital data (1s and 0s) that a computer
can recognize. It also converts digital data from a
computer or other device into an analog signal that can
be transmitted over standard telephone lines. Modems
are not needed for fiber optic connections because the
signals are transmitted digitally from beginning to end.
 Router

The router, or at least the common home network

device known as a router, is a piece of network
hardware that allows communication between
your local home network (such as your personal
computers and other connected devices) and the
internet. The router used in home and small
network networks is more accurately referred to
as a residential gateway, but you'll never hear

 Printer
A printer is an external hardware output device that
creates a hard copy of electronic data stored on a
computer or other device. For instance, if you created
a report on your computer, you could print multiple
copies to distribute at a staff meeting. Printers are
one of the most common computer peripherals, and
they are frequently used to print text and photos.

printer-11818753112.html

Kinds of Printers

1. Inkjet Printer
An inkjet printer is a popular choice for home printing
needs. They create images by precisely spraying
thousands of tiny ink droplets onto paper, similar
to how TV and computer screens render images
through clusters of thousands of pixels.
Ink

Image 1.23a Inkjet Printer. Image Source: cartridges are usually sold in yellow, magenta, and
https://bh.rsdelivers.com/product/epson/c11cg20
401ca/epson-et-3750-inkjet-printer/1967777 cyan colors. Together, these three primary colors can
be mixed by the printer to form whatever colors are
necessary for the print job.
2. Laser Printer
Laser printers use toner, a powder that's melted onto
the paper, to create permanent images. These types
of printers typically make quick prints with documents
that are smudge and fade-resistant. Laser printers work
by aiming laser beams at a rotating light-sensitive
drum/photoreceptor to flash the image of the page.
Image 1.23b Laser Printer. This charges the areas of the drum that correspond to
https://www.brother.com.ph/en/products/all- where areas of black and white or color appear in the
printers/printers/hl-l5100dn
image. By reversing the charge in certain areas, the
laser beam can print patterns such as text and pictures
onto the photoreceptor. The pattern on the drum is then coated with positively-charged toner that
clings to areas negatively charged by the laser. When the paper goes through the printer, the toner is
transferred through electric charge onto the paper, where it sticks, is melted on, and forms a clean
finished image.
Warning:
Laser printers are designed to generate heat. That is why you should never leave dust covers
open on laser printers while they are in use. Your laser printer may overheat if adequate air ventilation
is not provided. Allow your laser printer to cool before putting on the dust cover to keep lint and small
insects out.
