Find out how will you know and understand the importance of physical movements in your
daily life. These activities will assess your knowledge and skill on Health - Related Fitness.

Directions:
1. Identify and classify the picture shown on the following page based on the
components of Health-Related Fitness.

What Is It

Below is a discussion of the components of HRF. Read it carefully on your worksheet,

answer the questions following article.

Components of Health-related Fitness

Fitness is defined as the state of being physically fit and healthy. It refers to
your own optimal health and overall well-being. Being fit not only means physical
health, but emotional and mental health, too. It defines every aspect of your health.
Smart eating and active living are fundamental to fitness.

Physical fitness can be defined as a set of characteristics that are either health-
related or skill-related. It refers to your ability to perform physical tasks efficiently as
it relates to a particular sport or your day-to-day activities. In addition to physical
health, being physically fit helps improve your mental, emotional, and social health.

Physical fitness is divided into 4 health related and six skill-related

components. Health –related fitness is the ability to become and stay physically
healthy. Skill-related fitness enhances in athletic or sports events.

Health Components Skill Components

Cardiovascular fitness Agility

Muscular strength and endurance Balance
Flexibility Power
Body Composition Speed
Coordination
Reaction time

Health-related components focus on the factors that promote optimum health

and prevent the onset of disease and problem associated with an activity. The four
components are describe as follows:

Cardiovascular fitness is the ability of the heart (cardio) and circulatory

system (vascular) to supply oxygen to muscles for an extended period of time. This is
how efficiently your body takes in, transports, and uses oxygen while exercising.
Having efficient heart and lungs leads to increased energy throughout the day.
Cardiovascular is also called cardio respiratory(lung) fitness. Usually the 1 km run or
other type of continuous fitness activity ( 12-minute run, cycling, step-test, etc.) is
used to assess cardiovascular fitness.

Muscular strength and endurance is the muscle’s ability to produce effort or

perform work. Muscular strength is the maximum amount of force a muscle can
produce in a single effort or how much you can lift in one attempt. Performing
exercises that use your own body weight, free weights, or weights on a machine are
excellent ways to develop muscle strength. Having muscular strength will ensure that
you have the strength needed to lift a heavy object, for example a box full of books.
Muscular endurance is your ability to contract your muscles several times without
excessive fatigue. Another way to think about it is the length of time your muscles can
continue to work before tiring. What this means is once you have picked up that
heavy box of books, you can then carry that box for a long period of time before you
need to take a break. Performing push-ups and sit –ups or crunches for one minute is
commonly used in fitness testing of muscular endurance.

Flexibility is the range of motion that your joints have during movement.
Maintaining flexibility can improve your performance in physical activities in
addition to decreasing your risk of injuries by helping your joints move through their
full range of motion, therefore, allowing your muscles to work most effectively. The
sit- and- reach is commonly used to determine flexibility.

Body composition is the ratio of water, bone, muscle, and fat in the body. A
healthy body composition indicates that you may have less risk of developing obesity-
related diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even some cancers.

Two of the ways to measure body composition are body mass index, (BMI),
which is a measure of body fat based on height and weight, and the skin fold test,
which measures total fat percentages by measuring the layer of fat that is directly
under the skin.

The lack of physical fitness has been associated with a number of health
problems. Hypo-kinetic disease is a condition related to lack of regular physical
activity. To minimize the chance of hypo-kinetic disease and increase the degree of
wellness among individuals, an active lifestyle is highly recommended.

To improve quality of life, health related fitness includes the following:

1. Increases muscle tone and strength

2. Decreases susceptible and illness
3. Bone mineral density
4. Reduces risk of osteoporoses
5. Improves posture
6. Increase efficiency of the respiratory and circulatory system
7. Decease risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke
8. Improves blood pressure
9. Decreases risk of diabetes and some cancers
10. Improves self-esteem and self confidence
11. Decreases body fat and improves metabolism and;
12. Increases energy and academic achievement

What’s More

Independent Activity 1. Matching Type

A. Directions: Match column A with column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on
the space provided before each number. Do it in your P.E. notebook.

A B

_______1. Body Composition a. the ability to exert force to

move an object

_______2. Muscular strength b. the heart’s ability to supply

oxygen to working muscles

_______3. Flexibility c. proportion of body fat and fat –

free body tissues

_______4. Muscular endurance d. to move fluidly

_______5. Cardiovascular endurance e. the ability of the muscles to

maintain force for extended
period

B. Write the word TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is
wrong.

1. An active lifestyle could decrease the decree of wellness among individuals.

2. Disease related to physical inactivity is known as hypo-kinetic disease.
3. A person who is physically fit can do a day’s work without undue fatigue.
4. A person who is flexible if he can move his body beyond the normal range of
motion.
What I Have Learned

What I Can Do

Activity 1: Family connection

Identify the usual activities of your family member in terms of health related fitness
components. List the important information regarding the family members in the table
provided. These will be useful in designing your family HRF activity plan.

Note: Indicate only people in your actual household.

EXAMPLE

Family Age Occupation/ Activities HRF Household HRF
