Very good! Modals are helping verbs that come

along together with an action word. ( while
showing the slide)

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs or helping

verbs, that is used to express ability, probability,
permission, obligation and many more.
Now class, what are the modals of verbs? The

Should could will May would

2. Could I play too?
3. Will you turn that music down?
4. You should wear a dress.
5. You must finish that without getting any help.

So class how is the modal verb can used or

function in the 1st sentence? S1. I think it is used to express or show ability
ma’am.
Yes! Very good. The modal can there shows the
subjects ability to eat lots of rice. How about the
2nd sentence?
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE

College of Teacher Education

S2. It is asking for permission ma’am.

Correct! Now what about number 3?
Yes the modal will there is used to request S3. It is requesting
someone to turn the music down.
How about the sentence number 4?

The modal will is used to suggest someone to It is suggesting.

wear a dress. What about the last number?

It seems like the statement is commanding

Yes, the sentence is in a commanding tone. someone.
The modal shall indicates command.

Now let us learn when to use the different modal

verbs. Please read the slide ms.

1. LIKELIHOOD- We can use the modal verbs

should and must say or show something in the
Okay, thank you. Likelihood shows probability present or future that is possible but not sure.
where we express something that is uncertain.
For example;
1. She should be lost.
2. Her parents must be so proud of her.

Okay who else has another example for the

modal verbs must and should in stating
probability.
(Some students would give their own examples.)
nd
2 use of modals is to state possibility. Can
someone please read the slide? Yes Mr.!

2. POSSIBILITY- To express something that

All right thank you. So possibility is where we can happen or not. We can use the modal verbs
state something that is possible to happen or could, may and might.
not.For example;
1. She may become the youngest member of
our team.
2. According to kuya Kim it might rain today.

Now, who has another example, anyone? Yes

ms. At the back.
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE

College of Teacher Education

which we have mentioned a while back. So
everybody read the slide.

3. ABILITY- expresses whether the subject is

Examples: able to do something. We can use the modal
1. I can ride a horse since I was 16. verbs can, could. We could also use cannot or
2. I could drive my father’s car without can’t to show that the subject can not do.
supervision.

Any addendum class?

Okay, so let us continue with the 4th use or

function of modal verbs and it is to ask None ma’am.
permission. May I request everybody to read the
slide.

4. PERMISSION- we can use the modals can,

may or could to ask permission.
For example;
Traditionally, may is considered the polite way of 1. Can I borrow your pen?
asking permission. For example; when you say 2. Excuse me, may I pass?
can I go to the bathroom? Others might
misinterpret it as “Do I have the ability to go to
the bathroom?”

Is it clear class?

The 5th usage or function of modal verb is to ask

for request. In requesting something we can Yes ma’am.
use and start our question with the modal verbs
will, can, would, could.

Kindly share it to class?

examples! class.

verbs, which is to give advice or suggestion.

ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE

College of Teacher Education

6.SUGGESTION/ ADVICE- to recommend or

give suggestions and advice. We can use the
modal verb should in here.
Take note class that giving suggestion or advice For example; You should eat more vegetables
is very different from giving command. Why do daily.
you think so class?

Your right class, because when we say

command you are giving order to someone but (The students would give their opinions.)
when you give advice you can just tell
recommendations.

defined as?

Yes and based from these modal verbs pasted

in front what do you think are the modal verbs
we can use in commanding? Giving order to someone ma’am.

Yes, that's correct! But we can also use have to

and need to in here.

So can you give me some examples of giving
command using modal verbs.

verbs which is to express obligation. Let us all ( Some students would give examples)
read the slide class. ( While showing the slide)

8. OBLIGATION- We express actions or duty

with the use of the modal verbs must, should,
shall, have and ought to.
Examples;
Okay, so who else has another example? Just 1. I must clean my room.
raise your hand to be acknowledge. 2. We should conserve electricity.
3. We ought to give advice to other people but
can not apply it to ourselves.
