The multifaceted nature of emotion recognition research, in addition to its numerous applications and
ramifications, has helped to fuel its increasing interest and attention in recent years.
In 1996, that Dellaert et al. published the first research paper on the topic “ Recognizing emotion in speech”
and introduced the idea of statistical pattern recognition techniques in the area of speech emotion recognition.
Over a thousand utterances from different speakers were recorded in the corpus. This was the first paper to
focus on Speech Emotion Recognition and was published by IEEE and added to IEEE Xplore in 2002.
Since then , emotion recognition to enable effective human-computer interaction, has become one of the most
important research areas in the field. In this study the annual number of publications about the topic is counted
from 2021 to 2024 .( Fig. 1.1). In the year 2021 , 5 papers were published successively. The progress in
Emotion Recognition has greatly promoted research interests of scholars in year 2022 , where a total of 188
papers were published exceeding the total number in the four years mentioned. A significant amount of papers
(66) were issued in 2023 . Till now in 2024, 4 papers on the topic have been published. In these years,
researchers have been concentrating more on multimodal approaches to emotion recognition as a result of the
realization that emotions are frequently expressed across numerous modalities, including voice, gestures, facial
expressions, and physiological signs.

CITATIONS:
An article's significance or "quality" is assessed by counting the number of times that other authors have
referenced it in their writings. To evaluate a publication's or author's influence, citation analysis calculates the
number of times in which the work appears in other publications. A work with more citations generally means
that the scientific community has found it significant and well-received. The following table lists Top 8 articles
with most cited numbers in the field of Emotion Recognition. Emotion Recognition from speech was cited 668
times ranking first in the table. This article was published by Koolagudi, S.G and Rao KS in 2012 on cuny.edu.
In the paper, the recent work on the challenges surrounding emotional speech corpora, various speech feature
types, and models used for speech emotion detection have all been taken into consideration and presented.
These papers established the groundwork for later ER technology research. Fig 1.2 depicts the bar graph of the
total number of citations per paper(marked with the serial numbers).
