TITLE OF RESEARCH Enhancing Literacy Proficiency: A Targeted Action
Research on Selected PSLIS Students' Reading and Writing
Skills
DIVISION Quezon

Context and Rationale

The ability to read and write proficiently is crucial for academic success and
effective communication in both personal and professional contexts. However, some
students face challenges in developing these essential literacy skills, requiring
targeted interventions to bridge the gaps in their proficiency. This action research
focuses on a specific group of students known as the "Selected PSLIS Students" that
have been identified struggling in reading and writing. These students may face
various obstacles such as learning disabilities, limited language exposure, or
inadequate instruction. According to Smith (2018), targeted interventions are essential
for improving the literacy skills of struggling students.

The purpose of this action research is to address the specific needs of the
Selected PSLIS students and enhance their reading and writing skills. By targeting their
unique challenges and providing tailored interventions, the aim is to significantly
improve their literacy proficiency. Additionally, this research seeks to contribute to the
broader field of literacy education by investigating the effectiveness of specific
interventions for enhancing reading and writing skills. The findings of this study can
inform educators and researchers in designing evidence-based strategies to support
struggling readers and writers, ultimately contributing to best practices in addressing
diverse student needs.

This action research aligns with the principles of action research as a

collaborative and iterative process. It involves actively engaging with the students
and other stakeholders in an ongoing dialogue to improve literacy outcomes. This
action research hopes to make a meaningful impact on the Selected PSLIS Students'
literacy skills, while also contributing to the broader understanding of effective literacy
instruction.

Action Research Questions

The primary aim of this study is to identify effective strategies for enhancing the
literacy proficiency of selected PSLIS students, specifically focusing on their reading
and writing skills.

The study aims to address the following research questions:

1. What is the current level of reading and writing proficiency among the selected PSL
students?

2. What instructional strategies and interventions can be implemented to enhance

the reading and writing skills of the selected PSL students?

3. What factors, such as teaching techniques, resources, or the classroom

environment, contribute to the success or challenges of enhancing the literacy
proficiency of the selected PSL students?

Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

Literacy proficiency is a critical aspect of academic success, yet many

students struggle with reading and writing skills. This is particularly evident in the context
of Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated School (PSLIS) students, who face
Literacy Skills challenges. The study will utilize a multi-faceted approach, including an
initial pre-assessment and post-assessment to determine specific areas of
improvement, targeted instructional strategies, and literacy-focused interventions.
The study will also have the observation time to know the factors that affect the
students’ literacy efficiency. By implementing this proposed strategy, the study aims
to provide recommendations for enhancing the reading and writing skills of selected
PSLIS students, ultimately contributing to improved academic success within the PSLIS
context.

Action Research Methods

A. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Information

In the course of this research initiative, the active involvement of Grade 7 and
Grade 8 students enrolled at Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban Integrated School
(PSLIS) is sought. The primary objective is to achieve a comprehensive sample size of
three hundred (300) students, employing a systematic random sampling procedure.
For eligibility, participants must be currently enrolled in PSLIS, actively participating in
English subject coursework, and specifically situated within the Grade 7 and 8
academic levels. This approach ensures a targeted and representative selection of
students for the study, contributing to the robustness and relevance of the research
findings.

B. Data Gathering Methods

An instrument used by the researchers, a pre-assessment and post-assessment

test, will be composed of various questions measuring the reading and writing literacy
of the selected students of PSLIS. In order to determine the validity of the questions in
the constructed research instrument, a validation letter will be sent to the college
instructor, requesting his/her expertise and recommendations. Upon giving their
suggestions, the instrument will then be revised and finalized. Afterwards, a letter of
consent from the principal and head teacher will be requested to allow the
researchers to administer the questionnaire. The survey questionnaire will be
administered to three hundred (300) students from Grade 7 and Grade 8 of PSLIS.
Upon administering the questionnaires, the data will be collected the same day. The
gathered data will be analyzed, tallied, calculated, and observed.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The data collected for the action research investigation on "Enhancing Literacy
Proficiency among Selected Students of Paaralang Sekundarya ng Lucban
Integrated School will be analyzed using a mixed-methods approach, incorporating
both qualitative and quantitative methods. Quantitative analysis will involve statistical
measures such as descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation) to
quantify the extent of literacy improvement among the selected students. This can be
achieved through pre- and post-intervention assessments, allowing for the
measurement of numerical changes in literacy scores. This includes administering
standardized reading and comprehension tests, reading logs and journals, and
formative assessments. While qualitative analysis will involve the in-depth examination
of factors contributing to literacy enhancement. This includes thematic analysis of
Page 4 of 6

qualitative data obtained from interviews, focus group discussions, or open-ended

survey responses.
The results of both quantitative and qualitative analyses should be
systematically reported in a comprehensive manner. The findings can be presented
in a structured format, starting with a clear introduction, followed by a detailed
description of the research methods, presentation and analysis of quantitative data,
exploration of qualitative themes, and a discussion that integrates both types of
findings. Conclusions and recommendations should be drawn based on the
combined insights from both quantitative and qualitative analyses, providing a
comprehensive understanding of the literacy improvement among the selected PSL
students.
The study started in January 2024 and will end in June 2024, covering the last
two semester of the school year.
