1. Find the vertical deflection at mid span of simply supported beam of length L
subjected to point load P at mid span. Take flexural rigidity constant throughout.

12. Find the horizontal and vertical deflection at C and vertical deflection at point D of a
frame loaded as shown. Take I = 30000 cm4 and E = 2*108 kN/m2.
13. Find the horizontal deflection of support B of a frame loaded as shown. Take E

14. A pin jointed steel truss is shown in the figure. The size and the arrangement of truss
members are such that all tension members have 11 kN/cm2 stresses and all
compression members have 7 kN/cm2 stresses under the application of equal vertical
loads (downwards) at joints L1 to L5. Take α = 12*10-6 per ˚C per unit length and E =
2.1 * 104 kN/cm2.
a. Find vertical deflection of node L3 for all the loading. [Ans: 6.51 cm]
b. If the temperature of top chords and end posts of the truss rises by 25˚C above
than other members, find vertical deflection at node L3 to the rise in temperature.
[Ans: 2.1 cm]
c. If due to fabrication error, the lower chord members were 10 mm too short what
would be the vertical deflection of node L3? What is total effect of all these three
conditions?
[Ans: 5.34cm, 0.93cm]
15. Compute the vertical component of the deflection of point A on the bracket to the
beam as shown in given figure. E = 200 * 106 kN/m2 and I = 160*10-6 m4 are constant
throughout. Ans : 7.29mm

16. Calculate the change in length of the diagonal BE of the structure shown below due to
applied loading. The area of upper and lower chords are 400 mm2, web members are
300 mm2 and E = 200 kN/mm2.
[Ans: 0.095mm moves away]
17. Calculate the relative deflection of joints F and D along the line joining them due to
the following causes.
a. The loads as shown, E = 30*103 kips per inch. [Ans:0.00183 ft together]
b. An increase in temperature of 80˚F in the top chord, a decrease of 20˚F in the
bottom chord, α = 1/ 150000 per ˚F. [Ans:0.00499ft apart]
The parameters in brackets in the figure indicate the area of member in inch2.

18. Frame shown below is made from a member having working stress in tension and
compression of 75 and 45 N/mm2 respectively. Calculate the cross sectional areas of
the members. Calculate also the horizontal movement of E under these conditions of
stress, E = 2*105 N/mm2.
Ans : 49mm

19. Find the vertical deflection at Y of the truss shown below. Take E =200kN/mm2, L/A
for horizontal members =6 mm-1, L/A for remaining members = 12 mm-1,
20. Determine the additional displacement at Y of the girder of Q.19, if the top boom is
subjected to a temperature rise of 20°C, the coefficient of linear expansion of the
material is 10.8*10-6/°C. Ans : 5.4mm

21. Determine the additional length required in each member of the top boom of the
 750 
girder of Q.19 if there is to be no central deflection.  Ans : lengthenin g 

22. The pin jointed truss is loaded as shown in figure. The table below gives the values of
member forces in terms of W. Determine the maximum permissible value of W if the
movement of the inclined surface is limited to 50 mm. Area of the member is 2700
mm2, E = 200kN/mm2. Ans : W  300kN
