STARRY, STARRY NIGHT

OBJECTIVES :

1. RECOGNIZE STAR PATTERNS IN THE SKY


2. OBSERVE THAT THE POSITION OF A CONSTELLATION CHANGES THROUGH THE NIGHT

PROCEDURE :

1. With an adult, go to a location in your neighborhood where you can observe the night sky.
Caution : do not go out at night without the company of a trusted adult.
2. Be familiar with your constellation chart (sky map).
3. Observe the sky . Look for Polaris to determine where the North pole is. You may consult your compass for
directions.
4. As mentioned , you will be able to see Ursa Major and Ursa Minor near Polaris. Consult your constellation
chart as you look for these two constellations. Look for other constellations.
5. Observe the sky thrice through the night. You may observe it at 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:00 PM. Record your
observations in the table.

1. How many constellations were you able to find?


2. Did the position of the constellation change through the night ?
3. If it changed position, did the arrangement of its component stars change ?
4. Was it easy or difficult to spot constellations ? Explain .
