PGDM I YEAR : II QUARTER

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT GUIDELINES

(The purpose of the Community Development Project, that is scheduled to be submitted in the II
Quarter of the I Year of the PGDM PROGRAMME, is to initiate the student in to the process of
community development by providing him/her an opportunity to undertake a live community
development project. The specific objectives of this project is to help you develop social capital,
develop social networks, become familiar with the voluntary organizations that are working in
the area of community development)

The process of community development project comprises of the following six/seven steps:

STEP 1: Identification of the problems of a particular community – urban, rural - such as a


hamlet, slum, neighborhood, gated community by personally visiting it. This should be done by
visiting a place. You should list out all the problems faced by them in terms of severity or
importance. Problems could be in many areas such as unemployment, poverty, malnutrition,
domestic violence, old people living without family support, pollution, lack of drainage facilities,
lack of drinking water facility in the vicinity, absence or poor condition of access road, absence
of school, distractive levels of noise, sound pollution, alcoholisms, nuisance from drunken
people etc.

STEP 2: Choosing a particular problem (only1) from out of these various problems and write it
down in as much of a detail as possible.

STEP 3: Reading books and articles and browsing internet to collect secondary data on the
problem identified so that you will impress the people with your knowledge and understanding.
You should add these as references in the bibliography.

STEP 4: Discussing the problem with the people in the community as to how the problem arose,
what are the different dimensions of the problem in terms of what are the difficulties experienced
because of the existence of the problem. Make a note of the discussions .you may use your
mobile to record the discussions.

STEP 5: Finding out solutions to mitigate the problem by taking into consideration what people,
community leaders, NGOs, other researchers etc., have suggested. You should identify the
government departments and agencies and voluntary agencies involved in this work and inform
about the various welfare and developmental schemes undertaken by them to the people( Such
as MGNREGA, Stand Up India, Make in India, Swatch Bhatath Abhiyan, Atmanirbhar Bharath
etc.)
Step 6: Identification and clarification of respective roles of community people, community
leaders, NGOs, government officials in soling the problem.

STEP 7: (NOT MANDATORY) Adoption of a village or community or neighborhood for


further work in cooperation with local community elders, NGOs and government officials.
