Product description
The Engine Control System (ECS) for an ME/ME-C engine handles the following functions:
· Engine start, stop and reversing
· Fuel injection, exhaust valve - and start valve activation
· Speed control (governor) and speed/load ramps
· Cylinder lubrication
· Condition monitoring with outputs to alarm and safety systems
· Activation of slowdown
· Activation of shutdown
· Scavenging air pressure control (optional)
· Autotuning (optional)
· Sequential Turbocharging (optional)
· Sequential Injection (optional)
· Overridable Engine Power Limitation e-EPL (e-EPL compliant SW rev. 1909-7 and onwards)

For ME-GI, ME-LGI and ME-GA engines where the ECS has been extended with the following functions as reflected by
the interface diagram 3092384-2 “Gas Engine Control System - Interface to external systems”:
· Gas injection or Gas admission (as applicable)
· Gas valve train
· Fuel gas system interface
· Inert Gas Purging System interface
· Double Gas Pipe Leakage Detection & Ventilation

Human Machine Interface (HMI) is provided in the engine control room through a PC-based Main Operating Panel
(MOP) and on the maneuvering platform of the engine through a Local Operation Panel (LOP) based on simple
electromechanical components.

The ECS relies upon external systems to handle slowdown and shutdown even for those conditions that are detected by
the ECS. Slowdown functions are assumed handled by an alarm/safety system and shutdown function by a safety
system.

The system consists of the following units:

· Cylinder Control Unit (CCU) – one per cylinder
· Engine Interface Control Unit (EICU) - two in redundancy
· Main Operation Panel (MOP) – one PC (MOP A) plus a back-up PC (MOP B)
· Auxiliary Control Unit (ACU) – three per engine
· Engine Control Unit (ECU) – two in redundancy
· Local Operation Panel (LOP)
· Scavenging Air Control Unit (SCU) – optional
A.m. units according to documentation from 3099296-9 General System Information.

When extended for gas injection or gas admission:

· Gas Engine Control Unit (SACU; S=Second Fuel=Gas)
· Gas Plant Control Unit (SPCU)
· Gas Plant Safety Unit (SPSU)
· Gas Cylinder Safety Unit (SCSU)
A.m. units according to documentation from 3099295-7 General System Information for ME-GI, 3099567-8 General
System Information for ME-LGI and 6136662-7 General System Information for ME-GA.

The Engine Control System are to be assembled by MAN ES designed and specified(OEM) components listed in
a ”selection list” in document: 3093398-0, List of Electronic Components for ECS.

Where amendment of components is regarded as minor change, the amendment is informed via a letter of notification to
DNV.
• Minor changes are as an example amendment of alternative components to the selection list, to increase
liability in the supply chain.

Where the amendment of components is regarded as major change, this will be included in a Type Approval Test of the
ECS.
• Major changes are including new functionality to ECS referring to IACS UR E22 table 1, system categories.

The MOP PCs are to be separately Type Approved. Current DNV Type Approval Certificate is TAA000006D.

The procedure for Software release depends on the impact on the safety critical functions:

Certificate No: TAA000027G
Revision No: 4

· Minor updates of Software have no influence on the safety critical functions and their release is performed by
submission of Design Update Notes including information about software version and implemented changes.
· Major updates of Software, which alter the safety critical functions, are introduced after performance of a Type
Approval Test witnessed and approved by the classification societies.

Type tested Software Versions – ME ECS for ME-GI, ME-LGI and ME-GA engines:
2201-x
1909-x
1903-x
1502-x
1601-x

Application/Limitation
The Type Approval covers hardware and software listed under Product description.

The ECS is approved only for controlling MAN B&W diesel engines with ME/ME-C/ME-CR design.
The extended ECS is approved only for controlling MAN B&W diesel engines with ME/ME-C design adapted for high
pressure gas injection, or low pressure gas admission, as second fuel.

The external safety system that normally handles fuel oil shutdown via multiple (number of cylinders + 2) normally open
contacts with parallel resistors allowing for monitoring of signal-loop integrity (broken circuit) shall be extended with two
outputs for shutting off gas injection also as reflected by the diagram 3092384-2 “Gas Engine Control System - Interface
to external systems.

Control and monitoring of the gas fuel supply system is not part of this Type Approval.

e-EPL arrangement is found to comply with IMO/MEPC Resolution 335(76), Clause 2 (Function).
Whenever a system covered by TAA000027G is retrofitted with e-EPL, evidence of correct functionality (Service/test
report) shall be available and presented to the DNV surveyor upon request.

Approval conditions
Application documentation
The following documentation of the actual application is to be submitted for approval in each case by Engine
Manufacturer:

found in “Factory Acceptance Test” doc. id. 3099569-1

Clause for application software control

All changes in software are to be recorded as long as the system is in use on board. The records of all major changes
are to be forwarded to DNV for evaluation and approval.
Major changes in the software are to be approved before being installed in the computer.
A Certification of Application Functions may be required for the particular vessel.

Periodical assessment
The scope of the periodical assessment is to verify that the conditions stipulated for the type are complied with, and that
no alterations are made to the product design or choice of systems, software versions, components and/or materials.
The main elements of the assessment are:
• Ensure that type approved documentation is available
• Inspection of factory samples, selected at random from the production line (where practicable)
• Review of production and inspection routines, including test records from product sample tests and control routines
• Ensuring that systems, software versions, components and/or materials used comply with type approved
documents and/or referenced system, software, component and material specifications
• Review of possible changes in design of systems, software versions, components, materials and/or performance,
and make sure that such changes do not affect the type approval given
• Ensuring traceability between manufacturer’s product type marking and the type approval certificate
A renewal assessment will be performed at renewal of the certificate.
