TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
Heart Disease
 Heart disease is a general term that
includes many types of heart problems.
It's also called cardiovascular disease,
which means heart and blood vessel
disease.

 Heart disease is the leading cause of

death in the United States, but there are
ways to prevent and manage many
types of heart disease.
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE

 CORONARY HEART DISEASE:

 Damage or disease in the heart's major blood
vessels.
 The usual cause is the buildup of plaque. This
causes coronary arteries to narrow, limiting
blood flow to the heart.
 Coronary artery disease can range from no
symptoms, to chest pain, to a heart attack.
 Treatments include lifestyle changes,
medication, angioplasty and surgery.
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
 HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE:
 High blood pressure, also called
hypertension, is blood pressure that is
higher than normal. Your blood pressure
changes throughout the day based on
your activities. Having blood pressure
measures consistently above normal
may result in a diagnosis of high blood
pressure (or hypertension).
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
 CARDIAC ARREST:
 Cardiac arrest, also known as sudden
cardiac arrest, is when the heart stops
beating suddenly. The lack of blood flow
to the brain and other organs can cause
a person to lose consciousness,
become disabled or die if not treated
immediately. If a loved one experiences
symptoms of cardiac arrest, call 911
immediately.
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
 CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE:
 Congestive heart failure (also called
heart failure) is a serious condition in
which the heart doesn't pump blood as
efficiently as it should. Despite its name,
heart failure doesn't mean that the heart
has literally failed or is about to stop
working.
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
 ARRHYTHMIA:
 An arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat,
is a problem with the rate or rhythm of
your heartbeat. Your heart may beat too
quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular
rhythm. It is normal for your heart rate to
speed up during physical activity and to
slow down while resting or sleeping.
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
 PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE:
 A circulatory condition in which narrowed blood
vessels reduce blood flow to the limbs.
 Peripheral vascular disease is a sign of fatty deposits
and calcium building up in the walls of the arteries
(atherosclerosis). Risk factors include ageing,
diabetes and smoking.
 Symptoms may include leg pain, particularly when
walking.
 Tobacco cessation, exercise and a healthy diet are
often successful treatments. When these changes
aren't enough, medication or surgery can help.
TYPES OF HEART DISEASE
 CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE:
 Congenital heart disease, also called a
defect, refers to one or more problems
with the heart structure that are present
at birth. These abnormalities occur when
the heart or blood vessels don't form
correctly in utero. At least eight out of
every 1000 infants born in the US each
year have a heart defect.
