Unit 4 - Activity 9 - DNA, Biotechnology, and Society Assignment

In this unit, we learned about the work of many scientists that has helped us gain invaluable knowledge
and understanding of the molecular structure and properties of DNA. When this knowledge has been
applied with technology, it has led to many processes that affect society today, including DNA evidence
being collected at crime scenes, producing genetically modified plants and animals, pinpointing the exact
cause of genetic disorders, manufacturing certain medications, and mapping the human genome. As our
scientific knowledge and technology continue to advance, more things become possible. However, with
each new advancement, questions and controversies may also arise.

Choose one of the following topics to research:

• Mandatory DNA fingerprinting upon arrest for a felony
• Familial DNA searcing to solve crimes
• Cloning deceased pets, such as cats or dogs
• Therapeutic cloning of tissues and organs for transplant

Research more information about the topic. Write a short report (2-3 pages) addressing the following
points about your topic:
• How does the process work?
• Why might it be used?
• What are the pros and cons involved in its use?
• What are the ethical, legal, and/or human rights issues associated with the process?
• What is your opinion on whether the process should be used? Justify your position using facts
from your research.

Remember that your report should include:

• An introduction
• A conclusion
• References (both cited in the paper and a list at the end)
