Testing Procedure For Voltage Transformer

A. Preliminary Work

1. Before test is conducted, check and confirm that circuit to which VT is connected has
been shutdown. Ensure that there is no voltage on both primary and secondary side
of VT. This can be checked from breaker position, VT secondary voltage, voltmeter
and neon indicator on switchgear panel.
2. Record down relevant particulars on VT nameplate including make, serial number,
rated voltage, ratio, class, VA rating etc.

B. Ratio Check

1. Inject voltage into primary side of VT. Single phase voltage of at least 110V shall be
injected.
2. Start from the R-N phase, then repeat on Y-N and B-N phase.
3. Record both the injected voltage to primary side and induced voltage on secondary
side. Check that ratio recorded correspond to rated values on nameplate.

C. Insulation Resistance Test

1. Disconnect neutral earthing of the transformer.

2. Check that other equipment in secondary circuit of VT such as voltmeter, relays etc is
isolated.
3. Check the insulation resistance of the following by selecting appropriate voltage on
the insulation resistance tester :
a. primary winding to earth
b. primary winding to secondary winding
c. secondary winding to earth
4. Conduct tests for R, Y and B phase VT.
5. Discharge circuits checked and normalise all wiring of the secondary circuit and
earthings.

D. Induced Voltage Test

1. Voltage injection into the secondary side of VT will be done with a three phase
variac.
2. Turn variac to zero output position. Raise voltage gradually to 110V ac. Rated HV
winding voltage would be induced on primary side.
3. Leave the voltage injected for 1 minute. No voltage breakdown shall occur during this
period.
