Task 1 – Part 1

What do you want to achieve over the final 8 weeks of the

Foundation Programme?

Please respond to the questions below as a starting point. This

document is a Prop/Prompt for you and your developed answers
should be loaded as a Scribd document in an appropriate position
on your Weebly site. You will update this proposal as you move
through the project, do not delete initial statements, add a date
each time you add a new statement to a particular section.

The final document should be loaded to your Weebly by the 6th of

May.

Question 1
Reflect on the work you've created so far and consider how your use of materials, tools, techniques
and processes reflect the broader ideas and message that you are interested in conveying.

What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a broader
range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?

I have used a large variety of materials and processes during my time on these modules and am
eager to learn even more during Module 3. I can expand on these with the idea of being confident
enough to use these materials independently.

The workshop I had on Puppet-Making with Mary inspired me to try it out myself in this module
and would like to see what other methods there are out there to achieve my project goal.
I can learn more techniques through research and just by figuring out what my puppet will need, I
can adapt and add any processes into my project.

Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work.

What does it communicate and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the
viewer/customer/client and their lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market
your work?

My work will communicate to teens to adult viewers because of the mature theming and ideals I
have for my project. It will be situated and proposed on a monitor since it will be stop-motion, but
also will have additional wall-hanged photos alongside it.

It will express the themes of femininity and the idea of growing older and making sure that your
offspring is ‘presentable’ for the new generation to see.
The project will be displayed on a big monitor screen and will be accessible via online media such
as YouTube. My Weebly Website can be shared indefinitely as a source of promoting myself – or
even better, I could potentially create a portfolio (On WIX etc.) aimed at the specialisation of my
projects.

Question 3
We make, design, and produce work to be shared and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.

What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?

I would like to make my audience feel questioned about how they think about the correlation
between media and beauty standards. The ideal reaction is for them to think about what they just
watched and idealise what it means to themselves. I feel like adult women would be the prioritised
target audience just due to the subject.
Of course, anyone however can watch, but may not get the direct message that the viewers
interested in those themes would. (I believe in visual terms, the final outcome will be clearer.)

If another reaction or feeling is necessary, disturbed or saddened would be ideal due to my overall
vision of the final project: an uncanny animation clip featuring little references to my research and
overall investigated meaning.

Task 1 – Part 1

What is your Project Concept?

In previous projects, we have focused on outcomes or objects, for this module we

are expecting you to design an investigation and for this to lead to an appropriate
outcome/object which embraces your specialism and matches your burgeoning
ambition.
Please outline the project themes - and the ideas that you wish to explore. Focus on the meaning
behind the work rather than processes, materials or skills. (There is a space for this information
further on in the document) This is a short module - so it is critical that you make a swift decision
and commit to an investigation early. We know that this is hard - but push yourself and work to
get to the making, design and production stage with confidence.

I would like to make a Stop-motion puppet and design it based on the character I redesigned last
module. I will focus on the design and once finished, would like to do a photoshoot of them in
different poses and a couple of short test stop-motion sequences. This would include testing out the
puppet's facial and body movements.
I would like this to be presented in a mature style, suitable for teens and adults rather than a
children’s TV show, with the animation being displayed on a monitor. At the same time, the main
images are put up on the wall separately.
(Edit: 21st March: I will design a brand-new character based on a moth due to it having more
potential for research, themes and concepts.)
I might create simple props for this piece to tie in a set-up of concepts I have such as the theme of
ageing etc.

Please give an overview of the project here.

What will your work look like? What technologies/tools/equipment/processes will you use?

My piece's stop-motion tests will be laid out in an almost uncanny way – I would like to
incorporate some form of prop into it, especially a chair on which my puppet can rest. A simple
backdrop as well would inform professionalism and a minimalistic approach, which enables my
character to stand out and take centre stage.
I may also create additional pieces such as a baby grub or caterpillar and spare accessories to hang
on the backdrop. This could be made potentially with simpler resources like clay and paper cut-
outs.
The images I will take for the puppet’s “photo shoot” will be edited to be black and white and be
presented in a way that looks like the front cover of a fashion magazine to link in with the themes I
am researching for my project: age, beauty, death and omens.
I would like the style to be dark and mature. Mature in the way of presentation and theming, and
dark for the deeper meaning behind it all.
https://youtu.be/mhErAA7ugZ0?feature=shared
“Come Little Children” (Music): The lyrics to this song are whimsical but also hold a dark meaning
behind it. The lyrics: “Weep Not Poor Children - For Life Is This Way - Murdering Beauty And
Passions”
Associate well with my concepts and the song can be easily considered a lullaby for children, so
this song is considered for my project – either by humming, the song playing itself or just to
connect well in context. Another version of this song is from the Disney film “Hocus Pocus” which
is sung by one of the witch sisters, “Sarah”.
This film has themes of witches and women being considered omens etc and of course one of the
main goals of these characters in the movie is to brew a potion through children’s souls to remain
“Beautiful.” All this ties in one way or another and can link to other research opportunities further
down the project.

https://youtu.be/eTKqnJ9we_M?feature=shared&t=2914
“One Night in One City” (Film Stop Motion): Uncanny Old Character, reading a book – I would
like my Moth to be reading a book alone, with her child.
The characters in this film overall look very grungy and almost not-human.
The lighting is appealing and would be something to consider when taking a photo or filming the
Stop-Motion Puppet. The film itself is very surreal and has a dark tone, I would like to make mine
in a similar way that would make it appealing yet meaningful.

“Marie Claire Pixie Lott Poses” (Image): I will photoshoot my Character in poses like this, not too
revealing, but more mature for adult eyes.
The part of the model’s job is for them to be attractive or appealing, this links in with my themes of
beauty and its standards – can my moth be beautiful despite their age and blemishes if posed in this
way? It would make for an image that you could analyse deeply. I will also use the black and white
filters for that shadowy depth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpaOjMXyJGk
“Dove Real Beauty Sketches | You’re more beautiful than you think (3mins)” (Advert):
This advert shows the difference between a person's perspective of themselves to a stranger's view
of them. This promotes body positivity and beauty portrayal. The adverts category goes alongside
the themes of my project and can be an idea to add to my project's animation: I can add Expressions
on my Moth character, such as eyelids and brows to express insecurity about themselves or their
child's future.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” 1937 Disney “Evil Queen” (Film):
This character connects to my theming and research due to the fact that they are portrayed as a
“Hag” to trick Snow White into eating a poisoned apple so that they can be the most “Beautiful” in
the land, which ties into the themes of beauty and how elderly women are portrayed as “Ugly” or
“Crippled”. The links of witchcraft and omens also help to inspire my character's design and deeper
concept, especially when a “Hag” can be a shapeshifter and a folklore legend. (Or even goddesses!)
Speaking of folklore, the “Mothman” is West Virginian folklore that looks like a humanoid moth,
linking my design to that of an anthropomorphic moth.

Pre-production: I will investigate Character design by researching different species of moths and
my initial themes and concepts to finalise my Moth Design. I will use my sketchbook for this and
work traditionally (sketching etc.) since this would be easier to reference when making my puppet
(Instead of printing out a digital piece, saving time and waste.)
I will use this experience to then research and create a scale drawing for my character to use as a
guide, getting the basic shapes and planning out what materials will be used.

While the scale drawing is in progress, I can do Maquette Making and sculpting in Plasticine to
create a prototype I can test and make different variations of to see which one works best.
Test Animations can be done last before the main production to see how I can improve or change it
in advance. I can also consider audio, using microphones to record foley etc.

Production: I will make the puppet; creating the armature using armature wire, skinning with latex
and foam, and adding finishing details such as fur-like materials, eyeballs, face joints etc.
The practising I will do in Pre-Production will help to inform my final Puppet.
I can also make props via Plasticine or perhaps other techniques such as clay, Paper Mache or
scrap/leftover cardboard as a base.
I will film my animation clips using Stop Motion Pro on either a phone or iPad, whichever will
provide cleaner results. The Photos will require a camera I have in hand and a small studio
backdrop, this can be edited further in Photoshop to add filters and fix any blemishes etc.
If I require so, I can look up Puppet-making guides online to support my research and process.

Post-Production: This will be when I will need to edit my test footage using Premiere Pro or After
Effects. I can further explore audio with this section and sync it up if needed. Photo Printing will be
necessary to produce my images taken in the photoshoot in physical form that can be displayed on
the wall. I can use the library printer for this, or UWE’s other speciality printing services for bigger
prints.

What skills will you need to develop to complete the work?

What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?

Since the Last Module, I have had a good understanding of Premiere Pro and Video editing, which
can be utilised and expanded on in terms of creating an edit that uses audio and colour correction to
create an atmosphere.

I am becoming more confident about Blender from Module 2’s indie project but may not use this
for my project this time. The sculpting tool in that software, however, could help in terms of
creating a 3D “Prototype” for a face design etc.
I enjoyed doing Character design and feel better towards it and can use research and references to
further expand upon this and make my Moth feel more subjected towards the themes I want to
explore.
Stop Motion was fun, and the process is something I can improve on. This will rely on
me to further my knowledge and reach out of my comfort zone by making my stop-motion puppet
more refined and making a scale drawing and researching alternative processes to create my
workable Moth character. This is achievable and I am confident I can hone my techniques and
skills in this module.

I always feel I can develop my research and reflection skills in each project by doing more and
more, I can adapt to a bigger load.
Practically, I take notes in class either by recording the session audio or by writing key notes down
manually via a notepad. They are helpful in ways that I can write these up on my Weebly Website
journal and reflect on the learning received.
Advice from my peers and tutors helps to inform my learning direction and brings more inspiration
for future projects.

For this module I would like to work with my sketchbook more, a way I can do this would be to
continue concepting my character's design and draw them in different styles to see if they could
work better as an idea. Scheduling is another general skill I would like to improve by making more
adaptable to-do lists and making sure they are done by a certain date or do it for a set amount of
time each week.

To make for a successful outcome, I would like to learn more about scale drawing for my puppet
and then need to expand on the style choices – practise and experiment with different styles to see
which concept can be more adaptable to becoming a moveable armature.

I would like to become more independent and try out ideas and techniques on my own, like
preparing and putting together my puppet on my own and supplying myself with the materials I
will need to create my projects. This will help to move me towards a better workflow, help to
inform more independent thinking for the future and create a project I am proud of.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
The focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?

I have already researched a ton of concepts and themes, such as omens, death, feminism, and
beauty alongside different species of Moths to inform my character design.

I can go further by zoning in on two or three of my themes and expanding the meaning from there
to incorporate my project's potential.
I can research more fluently by starting with visual images; by connecting visuals with other
similar concepts, I can produce some sort of “Research Image Board”. This can be done by simply
bookmarking the images and web links or by making the board visually using Photoshop or other
image-merging apps. Doing this will help to keep all my main research points together and could
help to create more ideas I can propose for my project.

Task 1 – Part 2

This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.

Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and coordinate your making with availability?

Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste,
and environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you
can’t manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint? How will you plan
for the end of life of your object/s, how will you remove it from the studio at the end of the
exhibition and how will you recycle and dispose of it? What is the recycling/disposal protocol for
the materials you are using? How is this affected once you combine materials together?

I will make sure to only use materials I will need to offset waste. I can use my sketchbook
concerning paper and footprint usage.

My product will be kept and brought home after the studio exhibition for display purposes.
If I decide it is not needed anymore, I can potentially reuse some of the materials on it for another
project etc.
Combining the materials I will be using will render my object unrecyclable due to the addition of
glue and similar adhesives.
The photos should be ok when it comes to disposal but would be better off again, as a display piece
which I am highly considering.

Task 1 – Part 2

Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, wood,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
