CHEM110 SI worksheet 3

Redox reactions, acid, base, and titration

1. Balance the following in basic medium:

(a) C2H5OH + MnO4- → C2H3O- + MnO2
(b) Co(OH)2 (s) + SO32- → SO42- + Co

2. Balance the following in acidic medium:

(a) CrO42- + I- → Cr3+ + I2
(b) ClO3- + SO2 → SO42- + Cl-

3. A solution of HNO3 of unknown concentration was titrated with 0.948 M KOH. 21.32
mL of the base was required to neutralize a 10.0 mL sample of acid.
(a) Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction.
(b) Calculate the concentration of the acid.

4. The compound acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), HC9H7O4, is found in many pain relievers,
such as Asprin. An ASA product was analysed by dissolving a tablet weighing 0.250 g
in water and titrating with 0.030 M KOH. The titration required 29.40 mL of base.
What was the percentage by weight of acetylsalicylic acid in tablet?

5. A 4.838 g sample of carbonate rock with the formula MxCO3 is crushed and reacted
with 100.0 mL of 0.9972 M HCl as follows:
MxCO3(s) + HCl(aq) →MxCly(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)
The excess HCl is back-titrated to the endpoint with 25.12 mL of a 1.013 M Ba(OH)2
solution according to the following equation
2HCl(aq) + Ba(OH)2(aq) → BaCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l)
Calculate the molar mass of MxCO3 and hence identify metal M.
6. Manganese is derived from pyrolusite ore, an impure manganese dioxide (MnO2,
-1
86.94 g mol ). In a procedure used to analyse a pyrolusite ore for its MnO2 content,
-1
a 1.053 g sample is treated with 1.651 g oxalic acid (C2H2O4, 90.03 g mol ) in acidic
medium.
MnO2 + C2H2O4 + 2 H+→ Mn2+ + 2 H2O + 2 CO2
The excess oxalic acid is titrated with 30.06 mL of 0.1000 M KMnO4.
-
2 MnO4 + 5 C2H2O4 + 6 H+ → 2 Mn2+ + 8 H2O + 10 CO2
Calculate the percentage purity (% m/m) of MnO2 in the ore.
