Prime Objective
A fixed point for a function is a number at which the value of
the function does not change when the function is applied.
Conversely
If the function 𝑔 has a fixed point at 𝑝, then the function defined by
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 – 𝑔(𝑥) has a zero at 𝑝.
Note
The fixed-point problem turns out to be quite simple both
theoretically and geometrically.
The function 𝑔(𝑥 ) will have a fixed point in the interval [𝑎, 𝑏]
whenever the graph of 𝑔(𝑥 ) intersects the line 𝑦 = 𝑥 .

Fixed-Point Theorem
Suppose, in addition, that 𝑔 ' exists on (𝑎, 𝑏) and that a constant
0 < 𝑘 < 1 exists with
𝑔 ′ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑘 < 1, for all 𝑥 ∈ (𝑎, 𝑏).
Then for any number 𝑝0 in [𝑎, 𝑏], the sequence defined by
𝑝𝑛 = 𝑔 𝑝 𝑛 − 1 𝑛 ≥ 1
converges to the unique fixed point 𝑝 in [𝑎, 𝑏].

Uniqueness Result
Let 𝑔 ∈ 𝐶[𝑎, 𝑏] and 𝑔(𝑥 ) ∈ [a, b] for all 𝑥 ∈ [𝑎, 𝑏]. Further if 𝑔′ (𝑥)
exists on (𝑎, 𝑏) and
𝑔′ (𝑥) ≤ 𝑘 < 1, ∀𝑥 ∈ [𝑎, 𝑏],
then the function 𝑔 has a unique fixed point 𝑝 in [𝑎, 𝑏].
