MARY STUART TO MARIE ANTOINETTE, AND, IN MORE RECENT YEARS,
PRINCESS GRACE OF MONACO. SO YOU’RE BASICALLY A PRINCESS.

WHAT’S THE
STITCH?

DIAGONAL WHEAT STITCH

With a simple little pulled-in belt,
this stitch transforms from three
diagonal lines to a bow of wheat. It’s
a useful stitch for filling small-to-
large areas. 1

+ Working in diagonal columns, starting 5
from top to bottom, bring the needle 2
up at 1 and down through the canvas
hole at 2, across three intersections of 4
canvas, up at 3 and down at 4, up at 5 6 A
and down at 6.
B
You now have three parallel stitches all
the same length.
+ To work the belt in the centre of the
stitches, bring the needle up through
the canvas hole at A and down at B,
across one intersection of the canvas.
Don’t pull too tight, but aim for a nice
even tension on the belt.
+ Bringing the needle up at 5, repeat to
create the next diagonal wheat stitch
and continue in this way until you
have a diagonal row filling the desired
height.
+ To add another row alongside, just
simply make sure to line up your
diagonal wheat stitches.
+ Gaps between the rows of diagonal
wheat stitch can be filled with lines
of diagonal backstitch (see Simple
Stitches).
