Job purpose

Provide technical production expertise for a wide range of situations, including the most complicated
and demanding productions, assuming the overall responsibility for the planning and realisation of
high quality sound operations for a production or event in order to realise editorial objectives.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

 Provide leadership. This might include planning and managing extensive or multiple technical
facilities or balancing and controlling high profile and demanding productions, sessions and
recordings.
 Direct and motivate large teams of multi-disciplined staff, provide first-line management for
operational staff on site and be the first point of contact for technical and logistical queries; where
appropriate conducting or contributing to appraisals.
 Assume responsibility for the entire operation of specialism for a production; guiding teams and
deploying resources in the most effective manner.
 Plan and organise significant technical, staffing and logistical requirements for programmes,
series of programmes or events where necessary; source hire equipment and facilities from
external providers where required.
 Work with senior colleagues to plan and account for the costs and resources associated with the
delivery of specific programmes or events, providing suitable cost breakdowns where requested.
 Provide creative technical leadership to operational and production teams; ensuring staff welfare
is provided for; maintaining and sharing knowledge of most-up-to-date industry technologies.
 Where appropriate take on responsibility for leadership of strands of work and liaison with senior
stakeholders to ensure creative and business requirements are met.
 Contribute to the development of new business for the department, including pitches.
 Work with production teams to determine and interpret technical requirements and advise on
creative and technical solutions and limitations; interpret and manage changing production
requirements within financial and strategic operational constraints.
 Advise contributors, including presenters, actors and musicians, on aspects of performance
relating to the sound balance.
 Communicate complex information in an appropriate way for stakeholders at all levels.
 When delegated or when appropriate, taking responsibility for aspects of production.
 Negotiate effectively with other agencies (e.g. security services, regulatory bodies and
government representatives) to ensure the timely and safe delivery of staff and equipment and the
most efficient execution of the programme.
 Lead planning meetings as needed; assist with departmental and production forward planning,
liaising on all matters relating to technical production.
 Ensure that all activities comply with BBC safety requirements, including the creation and
ongoing monitoring of relevant risk assessments; ensuring the safety of self and others and
present no hazard to the public; maintain industry-standard safety qualifications.
 Use skills to create innovative solutions to resolve immediate technical problems and act as first
line support where necessary.

 Assist in the development of new effective ways of working.


 Brief colleagues and production staff on developing technical procedures and where appropriate,
to assist in the training and mentoring of colleagues.
 Act as part of the wider management team, deputising for team leaders or operations managers
when required.
 As appropriate, drive BBC or hire vehicles, ensuring compliance with regulation and BBC
policies.
 Where appropriate to take on or contribute to project work and to contribute to the appraisal of
junior staff.
 Where appropriate schedule staff and resources and forward/current planning.
 Act as a fire warden where needed.

Knowledge, skills, training and experience

Essential

 Operational experience and knowledge of production processes and the technical requirements
needed to deliver programmes, sessions and events on the required platforms.
 Knowledge and experience of radio studio and/or outside broadcast operation.
 Knowledge and expertise of specialisms appropriate to the role.
 Experience of successfully leading teams.
 Knowledge of safety regulations and an ability to operate to and communicate safe working
practices in the workplace and on outside broadcasts.
 Ability to use engineering skills creatively to devise solutions to complex technical problems in
situations where no back-up is available.
 Ability to engage with senior representatives of outside organisations such as governmental
bodies and artist management.
 Excellent aural judgement.
 Ability to manage resources within financial and technical constraints.

Desirable

 Industry-standard safety qualifications.


 Formal qualification in specialism appropriate to the role.
