JOB TITLE: Innovate Support Technician

JOB PURPOSE:

The Black Country & Marches Institute of Technology (IoT) delivers higher level
training programmes in manufacturing and construction to support local businesses. It
is now looking to expand its services, by opening up access to our specialist facilities
for the benefit of local SMEs through our Innovation Hub. We want to support local
employers as they look to innovate in their business or drive productivity, by offering
technical support in adoption of new engineering and manufacturing processes.

The role of the Innovate Support Technician is pivotal in supporting the


implementation of technical solutions to manufacturing and engineering SME’s
within the Black Country. The primary purpose of this position is to collaborate
closely with the IoT’s Innovation Consultant and local businesses, playing a hands-on
role in the deployment and maintenance of various innovation interventions. This will
include adoption of such technologies as CNC manufacturing, automation and
robotics, computer aided design, rapid prototyping and materials testing. The Innovate
Support Technician will utilise their expertise to provide technical support to these
businesses, ensuring successful delivery of innovative solutions. By actively
contributing to the execution of technical projects, this role aims to enhance the
productivity and technological capabilities of local businesses, while providing
valuable real-world work experience opportunities for our students

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Main Duties:

1. Technical Implementation: Collaborate with the IoT colleagues to implement and


execute technical solutions for SMEs identified in support plans. This includes
hands-on involvement in deploying technologies such as CNC, robotics and rapid
prototyping, ensuring successful integration and functionality.

2. Assist in conducting technical training sessions for local businesses and project
collaborators. Effectively communicate complex technical concepts in both oral
and written formats, tailoring explanations to the audience’s technical proficiency
to facilitate understanding and knowledge transfer.

3. Support the ongoing maintenance, calibration and presentation of the Innovation
Hub equipment while managing a consumables budget directly linked to
innovation services.

4. Assist in the supervision of work projects for IoT/College students

5. Actively engage in making and maintaining individual work-related contacts, both


internally and externally. Cultivate professional relationships with key
stakeholders, industry experts and collaborators to stay informed about industry
trends and developments.

6. Assessment and Support: Assist in conducting technical assessments for local


businesses, gaining a comprehensive understanding of their specific challenges
and needs. Provide hands-on support in addressing identified technical issues,
fostering a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

7. Support employer groups to engage in the design and development of support


programmes.

8. Supporting the Innovation Consultant to work in collaboration with businesses in


the creation of an identified business solution.

Specific Duties:

1. Collaborative Project Execution: Work closely with the Innovation Consultant in


executing innovation projects with local businesses, using online and phone
support to SME’s. Contribute technical expertise to drive tangible outcomes,
supporting the businesses in adopting and utilizing advanced technologies
effectively.

2. Documentation and Reporting: Document progress, challenges, and findings


throughout the technical implementation process. Regularly report to the
Innovation Consultant, ensuring clear communication and documentation of
insights, improvements, and any adjustments made during the project.

3. Sustainability Focus: Contribute to sustainability efforts by ensuring that


businesses can maintain and build upon technical improvements. Provide
guidance on the long-term viability and maintenance of implemented
technologies, fostering a sustainable impact within the local business community.

4. Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including local


businesses, team members and project collaborators. Clearly convey technical
information and updates, ensuring a shared understanding of project goals and
progress.

5. Participate in collaborative meetings with the Innovation Consultant, local


businesses and project teams. Articulate technical concepts, progress reports and
challenges in a clear and concise manner, fostering open communication and
effective collaboration.

6. Maintain accurate documentation of technical processes including implementation
steps, troubleshooting procedures and technical specifications. Ensure that written
materials are accessible and comprehensible for reference by the project team and
stakeholders.

7. Collaborate seamlessly with the Innovation Consultant and other team members,
fostering a cross-functional approach to project execution. Actively engage in
knowledge-sharing and contribute technical expertise to enhance overall project
outcomes.

8. Serve as a liaison between different departments within the College, ensuring


effective communication and collaboration. Facilitate the exchange of information
and resources to enhance internal cohesion and efficiency.

9. Build and expand external networks by interconnecting with professionals,


organisations and industry contacts. Attend relevant events, conferences and
networking opportunities to establish and nurture connections that can contribute
to the success of the technical initiatives and projects.

10. Embed a customer-centric approach in service delivery, ensuring that the needs
and expectations of anyone receiving services are at the forefront of decision-
making processes.

11. Implement rigorous quality assurance measures to guarantee that services meet or
exceed customer expectations. Regularly assess and enhance service delivery
processes to ensure ongoing improvement and customer satisfaction.

12. Establish a robust mechanism to gather insights from businesses on service


satisfaction. Utilise feedback to make informed adjustments, address concerns and
enhance overall service quality for those receiving the services.
