1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 PURPOSE
The information contained within this Installation Manual describes the administrative and
technical aspects, features, functions, components, and operation of the Fairchild Model
AIOOS Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) system and its accessories and components. Any
and ali comments or recommendations regarding the installation, acceptance, or operation
of the Fairchild CVR or its accessories and components should be directed to the Product
Support Department of Fairchild Aviation Recorders, at Loral Data Systems.
The Fairchild Cockpit Voice Recorder system has been designed to meet or exceed those
requirements specified within and is approved under Federal Aviation Administration
Technical Standard Order C123 .
The Fairchild Cockpit Voice Recorder system is composed of three essential components:
the Recorder Unit, Control Unit Components with area microphone module, and Vibration
Mount. A Heavy-Duty Vibration Mount is available for rotorcraft installations.
The CVR simultaneously records four separate voice inputs. These inputs may be either
transmitted or received signals originating from the following recommended stations:
Pilot, Co-Pilot, Public Address or Third Crew Member, and Cockpit Area Microphone.
Approval of the Fairchild Cockpit Voice Recorder system is not authorized by this Installa-
tion Manual. Acceptance for the installation and use of the CVR and its associated compo-
nents must be sought through the appropriate offices of the Federal Aviation Administra-
tion or other certifying agency. Approvals may be accomplished on a Field Approval basis
if the installation is determined to meet the criteria of the appropriate Post-installation, Pre-
flight, and Flight tests specified for evaluation within this Installation Manual. It is recom-
mended that all proposed installations be coordinated with the local jurisdiction of the
Federal Aviation Administration or other certifying agency prior to performing the installa-
tion.
The recorder is housed in an international orange, 1/2 ATR short case. It contains the
recorder assembly and associated electronics. (See Table 1 for leading particulars.) The
Model AlOOS is completely interchangeable with all part numbers of Fairchild Model
AlOO/ AIOOA CVR's, with no change in cockpit operating procedures. An Underwater
Locator Beacon is standard, as required by regulations.
Page 1
1.4 CONTROL UNIT
The control units are standard ARINC characteristic 306 panel format. The Model A 152B
houses the condenser microphone, microphone pre-amplifier, test switch, erase switch and
meter. The Model Al51B houses microphone pre-amplifier, test switch, erase switch and
meter. (Refer to Table 2 for leading particulars.)
The Model S151 and S251 Control Units are D016C compliant, and contain a green test
lamp in place of the analog meter. The Model Sl51 is similar in size to the A151B. The
Model S251 is smaller - 1 118 inches in height. Also, the S251 has a "D" shaped rear
connector, whereas the other models contain the circular ARINC 557 connector.
Remate microphone module, A55B is used when cockpit space limitations exist, and must
be installed with control unit Al51B, S151 and S251. (Refer to Table 3 for leading par-
ticulars.)
Standard mount equipped with four (4) vibration isolators. (See Figure
10) Isolator load range:
Spring loaded pins guide CVR connector to mate with mount connec
tor. Two (2) hold-down screws on front of mount lock Recorder Unit
into position. (See Figure 12 for Sway Envelope).
Page 2
C) Connector P/N 9300-435
For use only with Fairchild Model A55B cannister-style remote microphone
module.
Installation of the recorder, control unit, and remote microphone module is based on
ARINC Characteristic 557, dated January 10, 1964.
The Model AlOOS is designed to accomodate the newer Fairchild condenser microphones,
as shown in the wiring diagrams. Condenser microphones enhance voice legibility in the
cockpit environment, and are insensitive to magnetic fields. The common 400 Hz pickup
from adjacent equipment (transformers, wires, etc.) is reduced considerably, which may be
present in dynamic microphone systems. Since condenser type microphones do not contain
permanent magnets, disturbance of the aircraft compass is thereby eliminated, allowing
customers to install microphones in better acoustical locations then previously possible.
Loral's Solid State CVR is compatible with the older, dynamic microphones and control
units. Please contact Product Support for further assistance.
This section contains considerations and recommendations for installation of the Cockpit
Voice Recorder and associated system components. Interconnect harness wiring, physical
mounting, optional components (preamplifiers and summing amplifiers) must be considered
Page 3
when required to satisfy ali applicable regulations. The conditions and tests required for
TSO approval of this article are minimum performance standard. It is the responsibility of
those desiring to instai! this article either on or within a specific type or class of aircraft to
determine that the aircraft installation conditions are within TSO standards. If not within
TSO standard, the article may be installed only if the applicant documents further evalua-
tion for an acceptable installation and it is approved by the Administrator of the Federal
Aviation Administration or other certifying agency.
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued severa! Advisory Circulars which may be
referred to in the approval processes. Advisory Circular 25.1457-la specifically addresses
one acceptable means of compliance with Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 25.1457 (b),
(e), and (t). Installations must conform to the Operating Rules in FAR23.1457, 25.1457,
27 .1457, , and 29 .1457 appropriate to the category of operation under FAR Parts 91, 135,
and 121 (Air Carrier).
The CVR system may be powered by 115 VAC, 400 Hz, or by 28 VDC .
To ensure optimal performance from the Cockpit Voice Recorder System, the following
wire sizes and types are recommended as acceptable:
A) All wires except pins 2,3,9, and 17: Use #24 AWG or larger, for maxi-
mum 500 ft. length if shielded pairs are used. All wiring should be MIL-
W-22759 or MIL-C-27500.
B) For pins 2,3, 9 (Power leads), and 17 (Ground), use the following as a
minimum:
D) Single point ground. Reasons for specifying single point ground for
pin 17 are to minimize random noise pickup.
E) The maximum power consumption of the AlOOS CVR, including the Bulk
Erase function, is 11 watts DC or 12 watts AC.
The BULK ERASE connection is not mandated by the FAA and, therefore, it is an instal-
lation option. The circuitry required for BULK ERASE includes the installation of inter-
lock devices onboard the aircraft. If the BULK ERASE feature is installed, then at least 1
(one) interlock is required to prevent accidental erasure of the CVR . If the BULK ERASE
feature is not desired, Pin 55 (ERASE A) must be grounded to Pin 17. Pin 57 remains
open.
Page 4
2.2 AUDIO SYSTEM INTERFACE
The range of acceptable audio input levels for the Fairchild CVR is from 50 mV RMS to
500 mV RMS.
Earlier aircraft audio systems may require rework of their audio system to ensure recording
of ATC, Intercom, Mask Microphone, and Sidetone audio, independent of mode selection
on the audio control panel. ln some cases, selection of the Loud Speaker function disables
side tone output and, therefore, transmissions to ATC may not be recorded. Such condition
must be remedied to provide continuous received audio from the communications radios.
Old Systems - Rework the audio control panel or system to provide a CVR output or install
an extemal summing amplifier. Summing amplifiers can be obtained from Avtec, Baker
Electronics, Racal, and others. (See Appendix B & C for examples.) The addition of a
summing amplifier provides existing audio systems with the "hot" boom microphone
capability. No changes to the CVR are required (See Figure 7 for typical summing ampli-
fier installation).
New Systems - Some later generation audio control panels have a CVR signal output
already provided. A summing amplifier may be required to provide "hot" boom micro-
phone operation. It is the responsibility of the Installer to determine the means of interfac-
ing to comply with the regulations.
Future systems - Those audio control panels and systems designed to meet or exceed the
characteristics found in Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA), D0-170 for
"hot" boom microphone capability, may be determined to be acceptable.
The Fairchild Cockpit Voice Recorder is certified and approved for installation in any
combination of the following conditions: Heated/unheated, pressurized/unpressurized,
hard mounted/ shockmounted.
For long term reliability it is recommended that recorders be mounted within the vibration
mount in an upright position (vertical as viewed from the front) in a heated, pressurized
area in a fuselage location, as far aftas practicable. Refer to FAA Advisory Circular
25 .1457-lA for further details.
The most desirable location for the cockpit area microphone is forward of a vertical plane
oriented laterally through the pilot's and co-pilot's normal head position. The area micro-
phone must face the crew members. (Refer to Figures 11 and 12).
Page 5
2.5 CESSATION OF RECORDING
Federal Air Regulations 23.1457 (d), (2), 25.1457 (d), (2), 27,1457 (d), (2), and 29.1457
(d), (2) state that "There [must be] is an automatic means to simultaneously stop the re-
corder and prevent each erasure feature from functioning, within 10 minutes after crash
impact; ". The Installer must demonstrate this function.
Since the CVR system can be powered by either 115 VAC, 400 Hz or 28 VDC the follow-
ing methods are acceptable to ensure automatic cessation of recording:
2) If power input is derived directly from the engine-driven 115 VAC, 400 HZ
source, (not derived from AC Inverter), no other externa! circuitry is neces-
sary. It is assumed that the engine(s) will stop upon crash impact.
The Fairchild Heavy Duty Vibration Mount P/N 93-955 is recommended for rotorcraft
installations. It has larger isolators to dampen vibration to the CVR. (See Figures 11 and
12 for further details)
Typical aircraft CVR systems use the standard 18 dB attenuation selection. The attenuation
circuitry only affects. the cockpit-mounted Area Microphone, and is accomplished by
jumpering specific pins on the rear of Fairchild Control Units. For example, 18 dB attenu-
ation is accomplished by jumpering pins p, q, and r together. (See Figures 15 and 16).
Due to the higher levels of ambient cockpit noise found in rotorcraft, the installer can
select 24 dB attenuation. This is accomplished by jumpering pins q and t.
The Model AlOOS has a reduced high frequency bandwidth compared with earlier magnetic
tape CVR's and is, therefore, not compatible with the Fairchild Model 93A289 Rotor
Speed Encoder. Similarly, signals from other types of encoders using a subcarrier above
3500 Hz will not be recorded. The CVR Model AlOOS can be used with the new Loral
Fairchild Rotor Speed Encoder, Part Number 253-E0873-00. This new Rotor Speed
Encoder functions as a subband encoder recording the rotor speed at 205 Hz phase encod-
ing (PSK).
The following tests and procedural results must be documented in the CVR Installation
Checklist and submitted with the date package for field approval consideration:
Page 6
A. Before applying power to the CVR system and associated components, verify that
all connections are secure and that a continuity or other interconnect assurance test
has been conducted.
B. Apply power to the system and activate the Cockpit Voice Recorder self-test. To
activate, push and hold the green "TEST" button for a minimum of five seconds.
An internai 640 Hz test tone generator is keyed and sequentially switches through
the four channels of the recorder. Each channel receives the test tone for approxi-
mately .5 seconds.
C. For those installations containing Model Al51B or Al52B Control Units, monitor
circuitry receives the test tone signals and drives the meter, a "GO-NO-GO" indi-
cating device, located on the Cockpit Control Unit. The meter needle rises and
comes to rest in the "GO" (green) section of the meter scale.
For those installations containing Model S151 or S251 Control Units, the cockpit-
mounted test lamp illuminates when the CVR has passed its testing.
D. Aural monitoring of the 640 hertz test tone and channel switching can be accom-
plished with a 600 ohm headset inserted into the Jack located on the Cockpit Con-
trol Unit.
With the headset inserted into the Jack located on the Cockpit Control Unit, speak
in a normal voice 6" away from the Cockpit Control Unit microphone and note that
you can hear what you speak with a distinct delay without any significant distortion.
This delay (approximately 50 ms) is shorter than the 1h second delay associated with
Fairchild Tape CVR's. This test ensures the microphone is operating.
E. Verify that the following microphone inputs are recorded on their appropriate CVR
channels, regardless of Audio Control Panel mode or audio (communications radio)
selection, for Cockpit Voice Recorder installations within aircraft or rotorcraft
intended for service within the National Airspace Systems:
F. The Bulk Erase function can occur only when the aircraft is resting on its landing
gear. After depressing the bulk erase button (must be pushed in and held for a
minimum of 2 seconds), verify function by listening for loud 400 Hz tone through
the "HEADSET" jack. Tone duration: approximately 14 seconds.
Page 7
3.0 OPERATION TESTS
The Pre-flight Functional Check is used to assure the operator that the equipment is serv-
iceable. Therefore, it is to be performed before every flight or whenever maintenance has
been performed on the aircraft or rotorcraft which may have affected the performance of
the Cockpit Voice Recorder or its associated Audio System interface, accessories, or
components ..
Push and hold "Test" button located on the Cockpit Contrai Unit for a minimum of five
seconds. A 640 hertz generator is keyed and sequentialiy switched through the four chan-
nels of the recorder. Each channel receives the test tone for approximateiy 0.5 seconds.
For those installations containing Modei Al51B or Al52B Contrai Units, the meter circuit
receives these signals and drives the meter, a 'GO-NO-GO" indicating <levice, located on
the Cockpit Contrai Unit. The meter needle rises and comes to rest in the 'GO' (green)
section of the meter scale.
Because of the short time interval between each channel being fed the test tone , the meter
needle rises to an indication but does not completely fali to a zero indication between
signals, giving more of an oscillating action ora slight dithering aetion. ln the event of a
channel failure, the meter needle will fali out of the green section of the meter scale or
return to zero and give a definite 'NO-GO' indication.
For those installations containing Modei S151 or S251 Contrai Units, the cockpit-mounted
test iamp illuminates when the CVR has passed its testing.
A test of the Cockpit Area Microphone can be accomplished with a 600 Ohm headset
inserted into the remate "HEADSET" jack or into the "HEADSET" jack on the Control
unit. Speak in a normal voice 6" away from the Cockpit Area Microphone, and determine
audible clarity after approximately a 50 ms delay without any significant distortion. This
test ensures the Cockpit Area Microphone is operating.
A complete Audio System Interface test must be completed during each annual inspection
or specified maintenance period on the aircraft or rotorcraft whenever unscheduled mainte-
nance is performed on the aircraft or rotorcraft which may have affected the performance
of the Cockpit Voice Recorder system. To accomplish this test, the Pilot's, Co-pilot's,
Cockpit Area Microphone, and Third Crewmember or Public Address System inputs must
be individually checked for their operational integrity with the Cockpit Voice Recorder.
Upon satisfactory achievement of this test, an entry shall be made in the maintenace
records of the aircraft or rotorcraft.
Page 8
4.0 INSTALLATION ACCEPTANCE BY FIELD APPROVAL METHOD
An applicant for Field Approval of a CVR installation must be properly certificated and
appropriately rated, qualified, and equipped to accomplish the installation and approve the
aircraft or rotorcraft for return-to-service. The CVR should be installed in accordance with
the instructions and limitations contained within this Installation Manual.
Drawings and other information, such as structural related data to show the method of
attachment of the CVR components to the airframe, wiring diagrams, appropriate weight
and balance data, identification of all CVR system components used in the installation
should be made available to the Inspector conducting the Field Approval.
The CVR Installation Manual containing Operating Instructions and System description
must be made available to the inspector for review and evaluation of the CVR system.
The applicant must submit an F AA Form 337, describing the work performed to the
airframe to accomplish the installation of the CVR system. The Form 337 must also
include a statement that a complete Audio System Interface test was performed as required.
The applicant must make a statement on the Form 337 that the Cockpit Area Microphone is
installed within the recommended locations identified within F AA Advisory Circular
25 .1457- lA and in accordance with the instructions contained within this Installation
Manual.
The applicant should submit all appropriate data and drawings to the Inspector prior to
beginning the installation of the Cockpit Voice Recorder.
Any deviations to the installation instructions contained within this Installation Manual
must be brought to the attention of the Inspector and so stated on the Form 337.
Finall y, ground and flight tests must be conducted to verify that the Audio System Inter-
face is satisfactory and that "normal" conversation can be discerned from the Cockpit Area
Microphone and the individual Pilot, Co-pilot, and appropriate Third Crewmember or
Public Address stations. The CVR System must be found to be free of any objectional
audio interference and other unwanted noise in order to ensure discernible recordings. Any
discrepancies identified during the ground and flight tests must be brought to the attention
of the Inspector and corrected before the aircraft can be retumed to service.
If required, Loral can reproduce the CVR memory contents onto a cassette for channel
separation and evaluation. Contact the Product Support Department to coordinate this
process. If you prefer to make your own reproduction, refer to Section 6.
5.0 MAINTENANCE
Page 9
5.1 COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER
The Fairchild Model AlOOS CVR requires no periodic or preventive maintenance. Its
operation is completly automatic upon power-up. If the recorder fails the pre-flight
functional test, it must be removed from the aircraft for servicing by approved person-
nel. Maintenance procedures are included in Loral CMM 23-70-02.
The Fairchild Model AlOOS CVR carries the Dukane Model DK 100 Underwater
Locator Beacon (ULB), which is approved under FAA TSO C-121. The beacon is
attached on the front panei for easy removal and for easy viewing of the battery expira-
tion date.
The Model DK 100 contains a battery life of 6 years prior to its actual operating life of
at least 30 days. Upon expiration, the ULB must be returned to Dukane for battery
replacement and recertification. The DK-100 ULB cannot be serviced in the field or by
Loral.
Upon receipt of your CVR, the ULB must be functionally tested every 24 months to
ensure proper operation. Refer to Appendix F for details on Dukane's ULB tester.

is performed by Product Support.
Loral has factory trained technicians at each Authorized Repair Facility located worldwide,
who are capable of performing repair, readout, and loaner/rental services. Contact Prod-
uct Support Department for names and locations.
Loral' s Authorized Repair Facilities are capable of providing loaner/rental Fairchild CVRs.
Some facilities may not charge for loaner CVRs if the repair work is perforrned by that
repair facility.
Loral's Product Support Group maintains a limited supply of RENTAL Fairchild Cockpit
Voice Recorders. Rental cost for a CVR is $500 per week plus shipping charges.
The CVR cannot download data while mounted in an aircraft. Access to individual CVR
channel data is accomplished in the shop with a CVR Test Fixture and Audio Monitoring
Adapter (AMA).
With the dust cover removed, the AMA cable must be plugged into the edge-mounted
connector J-6 on the Audio Processor Card, P/N 205E059800. (See Figure 3) Make sure
that the AMA connector' s lettering, "TOP", faces the outside of the Audio Processing
Card.
Place switch S-11, Record Bias Voltage, to the OFF position on the CVR Test Panei.
Next, connect CVR to the Test Panei. For downloading, switch S-11 must remain in the
OFF positon; otherwise the CVR will start to record over the oldest information in
memory.
Apply power to CVR by placing switch S-1 to the ON position at the Test Panei. The
CVR will begin downloading voice data from the beginning of its memory. As long as
switch S-11 remains in the OFF psotion, consecutive downloads will commence from the
sarne starting point.
Page 11
1
During the memory download process, it is possible to quickly move to a more desired
memory location to facilitate the monitoring/copying process. Pressing the green TEST
button on the A860 will restart the dumping process at the most recent CVR power cycling
prior to its remova! from the aircraft. As before, if power to the CVR is interrupted
during readout, the data download will begin from the beginning of memory upon power-
up.
Because the AMA retrieves very high quality data, only an externai amplifier and speaker
are required to analyze the recorded data. Individual channels are accessed at their respec-
tively labeled jacks on the AMA. To doso, 1.4 inch MONO phone jacks must be used.
For making tape copies of the CVR data, a standard cassette tape recorder can be used.

APPENDIXD
Execution of a flight test may be required to approve/certify the Cockpit Voice Recorder
installation.
A predetermined list of words and phrases used during normal pre-flight and in-flight op-
erations should be prepared for use by the cockpit crew. lt is important for participants to
bear in mind that. in arder to obtain a satisfactory recording on the area microphone chan-
nel, clear enunciation in a natural voice is essential.
OPERATIONAL NOTES
The Fairchild Cockpit Voice Recorder will preserve only 33 minutes of recorded information.
A test program not exceeding 33 minutes of recording time should be planned prior to the
test flight. The CVR circuit breaker may be pulled and reset as required to preserve the
test recording on longer flights.
The test director shall announce time and condition into the area microphone at the start of
each condition, identify any significant events or warnings, and encourage conversation
between crew members.
a. Glose CVR circuit breaker about three minutes prior to engine start.
c. Check and identify, by speaking into the area microphone and listening for
playback at the headset jack, the airplane identification, date, and time.
d. Check and identify the takeoff warning horn and fire warning bell. Also record
a short excerpt of the pre-start checklist callout by the crew.
e. Record the normal cockpit conversations for one minute after one engine has
started. Each crew member shall identify himself by name. The Test Director
shall announce airplane status and identify any warning sounds.
a. Glose GVR circuit breaker. Prior to brake release apply takeoff engine power
and actuate the stick shaker with the test switch. The Test Director shall
identify the event.
a. Select cruise altitude. Glose GVR circuit breaker. Disconnect autopilot and
verify aural disconnect sound. Utilizing the flight interphone facilities, each
crew member shall identify himself and note that he is listening on his headset
at a comfortable listening level.
b. Select an ADF or VOR signal and identify these signals when they are being
produced by the cockpit speakers at proper listening level.
e. Glimb to 25,000 feet. Each crew member will don his oxygen mask and will
say "This is the pilot/copilot speaking through his oxygen mask mike." Repeat
this test for the headset microphone and hand-held microphone.
e. Reduce thrust until landing gear warning horn sounds. The pilot will identify
himself and warning device sounding.
d. Reduce thrust until stall warning horn sounds. The pilot will identify himself
and warning device sounding.
5. POSTFLIGHT
Remove Cockpit Voice Recorder from aircraft and provide flight test tape copy in a
format usable by the examiner/inspector.
