The following text is for questions 18 and 19.
Dear Sir/Madam:
I am writing to complain about the product I’ve bought. On 6th February I ordered a
digital camera from your online shop and I’ve transferred money for the product and shipping
charge.
It was stated on the advertisement that you would give me a camera pocket and 32GB
microSD card for free. Unfortunately, I could not find those items in the package. I thought
you forgot to insert the items in the package; so I didn’t think it was necessary to complain.
However, to make matters worse, I had trouble with the battery. After a month of usage, the
battery ran out its power so quickly every time I used it. Besides, the waterproof casing was
easily torn.
To resolve the problem, I would appreciate if you replace the battery since the product is
still in guarantee. I would return the battery, enclosed with the copies of my purchase records
and guarantee card.
I look forward to your reply and resolution. You can also reach me on
0869998856281.Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Niken Pramesthi

Stephanie Kwolek was an organic chemist, best known for inventing Kevlar in 1965.
Kevlar is an immensely strong plastic, which was first used as a replacement for steel
reinforcing strips in racing car tyres and has gone on to be used in a large number of
applications where high strength is required without high weight.
Kwolek was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA in 1923. She graduated with a
degree in chemistry from Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of Carnegie Mellon University
in 1946. She was quickly recruited to work as a chemist at Dupont Chemicals in Buffalo, NY.
Four years later, she moved to Wilmington, Delaware where she spent the remainder of her
career with Dupont. She headed polymer research at Dupont until her retirement in 1986.
After nine years of research work, Kwolek made her major breakthrough, discovering
Kevlar. Her pathway to discovery began a year earlier when she began looking for a new,
5
lightweight plastic to be used in car tyres. The idea was that lighter tyres would allow vehicles
to enjoy better fuel economy.
Not only did Kevlar find use in tyres but also has used in a large variety of protective
clothing applications, such as bulletproof vests because of the combination of lightness and
strength. Today, Kevlar is used in a great number of different ways, including armour, gloves,
tyres, yacht sails, shoes, ropes and tennis racquet strings.
Kwolek was admitted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1994. She was also
awarded the National Medal of Technology (in 1996); the Perkin Medal (in 1997), which is
seen as the highest award in American industrial chemistry; the Chemical Pioneer-Award of
the American Institute of Chemists; and the Howard N. Potts Medal for Engineering. She
died on 18th June 2014, at the age of 90.

Bandung Geology Museum is the biggest and most complete museum in Indonesia.
It is a well-kept place that attracts a large number of visitors. Opened as early as 1929 as a
geological centre by the Dutch, the museum is located in a very spacious colonial building on
Jalan Diponegoro. The museum is divided into three exhibitions, Geology of Indonesia in the
West wing, History of Life in the East wing and Geology for Human Life on the top floor.
The museum has a large collection of fossils, of which about 6,000 are on display
and the other 250,000 are kept in a safe. The research department is still very much active,
and next to documentation and exhibition, geologists specialising in fossils, stones, minerals
and volcanoes reside on the top floor.
The most interesting part is the West wing, where the evolution of human life is
explained in both Indonesian and English languages, with colourful posters and ‘Io and
behold’, a very nice collection of life-size dinosaur replicas, intermingled with several real
fossils of giant land turtles, hippos and other creatures you wouldn’t want to run into today. In
the far corner a selection of skulls can be found. Among them is a replica of the popular
‘Java man’.
Another very educational and interesting part is the volcano section in the East wing,
with explanations on formation and working of these in Indonesia abundant gunung api,
'literally: ‘fire mountains’.
The museum is very popular among school classes. Unfortunately, only the evolution
of human life on the West wing has English explanations. Therefore, there are several
English and French speaking guides available. Besides, for intricate questions the resident
geologists will be happy to discuss matters indepth.
All in all Bandung Geology Museum is a very informative institution, that makes for a
responsible educational day trip for young and old, and is a nice alternative to shopping malls
or factory outlets.

ESSAY
Read the following text carefully to answer the questions no 41 and 42.
Why Is the World’s Population So Unevenly Distributed?
Population distribution refers to the way in which people are spread out over a land
area. The world’s population is not evenly spread out. Why do you think this is so? There are
two main factors that influence population distribution; a) the physical condition of the place
and b) the level of technology of the people. This refers to knowledge, skills and tools that
the people have.
People tend to settle in areas where the soil is fertile and the climate is not too harsh.
That is why river deltas, such as Nile Delta in Egypt, are densely populated. There are fewer
people living in hilly areas with harsh climate because the extreme physical conditions make
living and farming very difficult.
However, it is not impossible for people to survive under unfavorable living conditions.
With improvements in technology, places which were previously thought to be unsuitable for
people can become suitable. For example, People can make an area with dry and hot area,
such as Arizona, more comfortable by having buildings fitted with air-conditioners. Farming
may be difficult in a place without fertile land and adequate rainfall, but if the people earn
their living by other means and not agriculture, the place will still be populated.
