Questions

1. The branches of linguistic study can be classified into a) Phonology, b) Morphology, c)

Syntax, d) Semantics and e) Pragmatics
Describe the distinction of each by showing the linguistic theory from the experts.

2. Cooperative principles in communicative activities must be well-saved by a speaker or a

hearer. Describe the few of logical reasons underlined this theory based on their maxims.

3. Language anomalies are mostly found in both of written or spoken language. Mention with
examples of each the type of language anomaly related to semantics or pragmatics study.

4. Leech (1983) argued that language politeness can be seen by cost and benefit theory. In
this case, he proposed 6 maxims of politeness. Mention and describe each of them!

5. Related to the maxims of politeness above, face threatening acts will not be able to be
avoided when the speakers are not capable to control the values of culture in social life.
Describe the statement above based on the politeness theory argued by Brown and
Levinson (1989)
