Rates of Reaction

• Understand the various factors that affect rates of reactions and know how to increase/decrease the rate of a reaction
FACTOR EXPLANATION HOW IT AFFECTS THE RATE OF THE TO INCREASE THE RATE OF
REACTION THE REACTION, YOU
WOULD:

• Determine the average or instantaneous rate of reaction if given a graph of concentration versus time

a) Calculate average rate between 100 and 400 s.

b) Calculate the instantaneous rate at 100s.

• Compare and contrast homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts

• Interpret a potential energy graph: identify quantities from the graph such as E a for forward/reverse reaction; correctly
identify the rate determining step; find the ΔH for forward/reverse reaction; write a reaction mechanism; identify
reaction intermediates and activated complexes.

Using the graph to your left, label all the items above.
• Use a table of initial concentrations to determine the rate law for a chemical reaction (𝑟 = 𝑘[𝐴]𝑚 [𝐵]𝑛 ); use the data to
calculate the value of 𝑘.

Consider the reaction: 2X + Y + Z → W

Experiment Initial [X] Initial [Y] Initial [Z] Initial Rate of a) Determine the expression for rate law for this
number mol/L mol/L mol/L formation of reaction:
