BRAINSTORM - APPROACHES - TABLE OF KNOWLEDGE
Many students struggle coming up with ideas when writing. Some include too many ideas
which overlap each other or are irrelevant to the questions. All of these issues would result in a low
score for Task response.
The purpose of this unit is to help students brainstorm and select relevant ideas for the task by
systematising knowledge for all topics with appropriate brainstorm approaches.

Education
A. SPET APPROACH

SPET stands for:

- Social issues
- Politics

Environment
- Economy
- Environment
- Education
- Technology
We would use the SPET approach to brainstorm ideas for macroscopic issues, which means tasks
asking about the impacts of the subject on the whole society or the whole country.
E.g.: “Some people say that tourism has many negative effects on the countries that people travel

BRAINSTORM APPROACHES TABLE OF KNOWLEDGE BRAINSTORM APPROACHES TABLE OF KNOWLEDGE

After filling in this table, you should have general knowledge about positive and negative impacts of

tourism on a country.

NOTICE

When writing an outline, remember to only select ideas related to the question(s) in the task.

If the task only asks about the negative impacts of tourism, just write about that. Do not try to “show

off” your knowledge by including irrelevant ideas such as positive impacts of tourism, or else your

essay would be off-topic and hence lose marks on Task Response.

Besides, even when you have many ideas, just select one to two ideas for each body

paragraph and explain them in detail. Do not be “greedy” and include too many ideas in your

paragraphs without giving explanation for them, or else you would lose marks for Task Response

as well.

B. STAKEHOLDER APPROACH

“Stakeholder” means a person or company that is involved in a particular organisation,

project, system, etc., especially because they have invested money in it. In general, this word is

used to indicate people who are involved in an issue.

We would use the Stakeholder approach to brainstorm ideas for medium issues, which means tasks

asking about the impacts of the subject on an organisation, system, etc. (not the whole community/

country/…)

E.g.: “Some people think that the government should tax businesses at tourist attractions higher

than other places in the country. Do you agree or disagree?”

→ The act of taxing businesses at tourist attractions would impact certain groups of people at tourist

attractions, but not the whole country.

After filling in this table, you should see how each stakeholder is impacted by this act, positively or
negatively. Then you can decide whether this act would bring about more benefits or drawbacks to
the stakeholders and make a decision whether to agree or disagree with the statement.

At present
C. SPECIFY APPROACH

“Specify” means to state something by giving an exact measurement, time, exact instructions,
etc.
We would use the Specify approach to brainstorm ideas for microscopic issues, which means
tasks asking about the impacts of the subject on individuals.
(Things need considering when people travel)
E.g: “Today, more people are travelling than ever before. Why is this the case? What are the benefits
of travelling for travellers?”

the centre first, then other features around it.

- If the map is an indoor area (normally the layout of a building), you should describe from the

Reminder before writing detailed outlines for the tasks:

● Circle the word to make correct statements

dictory or not.

B. TABLE OF KNOWLEDGE

Architecture is one of many social issues (letter S in SPET) like crime or health. Therefore, we need
to specify the aspects that constitute architecture. Let’s start it simple!
Imagine that you had a certain amount of money, enough to buy an average real estate in your
region.
First, list out all types of accommodation that you can think of:

Aspects Vertical cities Horizontal cities A. TYPES

A mixed task usually consists of two charts/ graphs/ tables. They can share the same or different
units.
For this type,
- In the overview, have a sentence summarise the main features of each chart/graph/table. If
the two parts have something in common, include that in the overview too.
- In the body, just describe each chart/graph/table in one body paragraph.

B. PRACTICE

The diagrams below show the main reasons workers chose to work from home and the
hours males and females worked at home for the year 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant.
