Upon completion of this lesson, you are expected to:

 identify the different steps in creating power layout;
 list down household appliances and fixtures that can be operated
using the power of electricity; and
 appreciate the importance of electrical drawings.

A. Directions: Read each sentence carefully and write TRUE on the

blank if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is incorrect.

______ 1. Electrical outlets (except in the kitchen) should average one for
every 6 feet (1.80m) of wall space.
______ 2. Electrical outlets in the kitchen should average one for every 2 feet
(1.2m) of wall space.
______ 3. The height of all outlets in the house should be listed on the plans.
______ 4. Each room should have at least one easy-to-reach outlet for the
vacuum cleaner or other appliances that are often used.
______ 5. Walls between doors should not have an outlet, regardless of the
size of the wall space.

Directions: Kindly read each item carefully and draw a check mark (/) on
the column that corresponds to your answer.

LESSON

LESSON 5: DRAFTING ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC LAYOUT AND

DETAILS USING CAD
LO5.1 DRAFT ELECTRICAL PLANS AND LAYOUT

LO5.1.13 ELECTRICAL POWER LAYOUT

An electrical drawing is a type of technical drawing that shows information

about power, lighting, and communication. Any electrical working drawing
consists of "lines, symbols, dimensions, and notations to accurately convey
an engineering's design to the workers, who install the electrical system on
the site. Floor plan dimensions will also serve as guide in determining the
length of wires.

Complete electrical drawings will guarantee the installation of electrical

equipment and wiring exactly as planned. If electrical plans are incomplete
and vague, the totality of the installation is largely dependent upon the
judgement of the electrician but the designer should not rely upon the
electrician to design the electrical system, but only to install it.

Rules in Planning the Electrical System (Power layout)

1. Electrical outlets (except in the kitchen) should average one for every 6
feet (1.80m) of wall space.
2. Electrical outlets in the kitchen should average one for every 4 feet
(1.2m) of wall space.
3. Walls between doors should have an outlet, regardless of the size of
the wall space.
4. Each room should have at least one easy-to-reach outlet for the
vacuum cleaner or other appliances that are often used.
5. The height of all outlets in the house should be listed on the plans.
4

6. GFCI receptacle should be provided as outline. GFCI stands for

ground fault circuit interrupter. GFCI is a type of circuit breaker
which trip quickly to prevent electrocution or electric shock and
protect people. The ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a fast-
acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event
of a ground fault within a few milliseconds.
STEPS IN PREPARING THE ELECTRICAL PLAN (POWER LAYOUT)

If the basic floor plan is already drawn, the designer should:

1. Prepare the floor plan;
5

2. Determine the exact position of all appliances on the plan;

Note: You may draw the appliances and fixtures or you may get it
straight from the AutoCAD Design Center.
6

3. Draw the electrical symbols representing the outlets and electrical

devices on the floor plan using different AutoCAD draw and modify
commands;
7

4. Show the position of all outlets and controls using electrical wiring
symbols and group them according to circuit number;
Note: Use line or polyline draw command, and different modify
command to perform this step.

Note: The number of convenience outlet in one (1) circuit must not be more
than 8 fixtures so that 3.5sq.mm. TW wire could sustain the load.

5. Draw the single line riser diagram;

6. Draw the schedule of loads and determine size of wires and conduits;
7. Compute for the total current to determine size of service drop and
sizes of wires;
8. Write electrical construction specification and other notes.
8

A. Directions: List down at least 10 household appliances and fixtures

that can be operated using the power of electricity.
