Stacking and loading of slip sheets, pallets and Master boxes

Definition – Slip sheet

A slip sheet is defined as a flat, thin sheet of material used as a base for storing, handling, or
transporting goods and products in a unitized load. Flaps are located on two or more sides of
the slip sheet to facilitate handling with specialized equipment. To reinforce the strength the
surfaces are coated to withstand shipping and storage environment.

Slip sheets advantagessing slip sheets instead of wooden pallets allows for 12-15%
more products in containers and weights considerably less.
 Slip sheets do not require maintenance, but can easily be replaced.
 Significant reduction is material handling costs.
 Can be customized to fit any size load.

Slip sheets strength and materials

 The strength of the slip sheet is very important, and it’s very important that the slip sheet is
stable enough to carry the goods.
 Slip sheets can be made of :
o Fiberboard or Solid Kraft board Slip Sheet Material: The fiberboard slip sheet consists of
several layers of solid fiberboard sheets laminated together .The bonding of layers of
several flat solid kraft board sheets increases the slip sheet’s non-tear strength. In
addition, some fiberboard slip sheets are coated with a plastic coating to improve its use
in humid environments
o Plastic Slip Sheet Material: The plastic slip
sheet is made of a combination of polyethylene
materials. This type of material allows for
greater non-tear strength and uses in cold and
humid environments.

o Corrugated cardboard cannot be used as

slip sheets !

 It is very important to take into account the humidity in the containers when selecting slip
sheets materiel
 A good slips sheet should minimum have a weight of 710 gram/M2.
 Strictly no reused/recycled slip sheets are allowed. Only new slip sheets must be used.
 Slip sheets must not be wet, soggy or torn.
 Slip sheets must not be dirty or stained.
 Always store slip sheets in dry places, and never on bare floors.
 All slip sheets shall have NO printings, and strictly no writings allowed on slip sheets.
 Do not exceed the manufacturer’s maximum recommended load per slip sheet. JYSK
allows max of 1 ton load per slip sheet.
 Creasing lines on the flaps must not be broken or torn; otherwise the flap will be torn
apart when pulled.

At JYSK DCs, goods received are transferred onto 3 basic platform dimensions as shown below.
The 3 main dimensions are:
1. Main dimension 120 cm x 80 cm (Maximum tolerance is 126 cm x 86 cm)
2. Main dimension 195 cm x 120 cm (Maximum tolerance is 205 cm x 130 cm)
3. Main dimension 240 cm x 120 cm (Maximum tolerance is 250 cm x 130 cm)

Stacking on slip sheet

EU pallet dimension – Priority 1 (120 x 80 cm)

Cardboard cartons must, as top priority, be stacked on slip sheet to meet EU pallet dimension
(surface area) of 120 x 80 cm with a maximum weight of 1000 kg. This is because at JYSK DC,
all goods are stored on EU pallets that fit the DC shelving systems.

It is highly recommended that

cardboard cartons be stacked
to EU pallet dimension of
120 x 80 cm

In the event where the overall area of cardboard cartons exceeds 120 x 80 cm, an extended
tolerance of 126 x 86 cm is permitted by JYSK. This extended dimension of 126 x 86 cm is
absolute maximum dimension permitted. Cardboard cartons exceeding 126 x 86 cm have to
work on priority 2, which is JYSK platform dimension.

In cases where the overall L x W

dimensions exceed EU pallet
dimension of 120 x 80 cm, JYSK
allows tolerance of up to maximum
of 126 x 86 cm.

JYSK platform dimension – Priority 2 (200 x 120 cm)

For cardboard cartons that are huge and are not able to fit in EU pallet dimension, such must
be stacked on slip sheet that fits JYSK platform dimension of 200 x 120 cm with a maximum
weight of 1350kg.

For large cardboard cartons

that cannot fit EU pallet
dimension, cardboard cartons
shall be stacked to JYSK
platform dimension 200 x 120
cm.

In the event where the overall area of cardboard cartons exceeds 200 x 120 cm, an extended
tolerance of 240 x 120 cm is permitted by JYSK. This extended dimension of 240 x 120 cm is
absolute maximum dimension permitted.

Maximum height of slip sheet

JYSK requires all cardboard cartons to be stacked on 1 slip sheet for all products. This must be
the top priority without compromise (See diagram on the left below). The maximum height for
cardboard cartons stacked in 1 slip sheet is 2 m high.

FIRST priority Use 2 slip sheets only if “single

(Single slip sheet) slip sheets” is not possible

If stacking on 1 slip sheet becomes unstable, JYSK allows cardboard cartons to be packed on 2
separate layers of slip sheets (See diagram on the right above). The bottom slip sheet shall be
1.5 m high and the top layer is 1 m high. In this case, the maximum combined height can be
2.5 m high.

If the delivery consists of more than one color, size or pattern, it is very important that the products
are separated from each other.

To indicate where one product stops and another starts, please use a kind of punctuation mark e.g. a
cardboard or something similar. Below is illustrated how JYSK expect a container with 3 different
products is loaded.

Appendix Z

Loading products with multiple cardboard cartons/collies into container

For products that are packed in more than 1 cardboard carton, all the cardboard cartons and
collies must be loaded in the same container to make a complete set. For example, a product
that is packed in 3 collies (1/3, 2/3 & 3/3) should be in slip sheet with all collies 1 in one slip
sheet, collies 2 in another slip sheet and collies 3 in a different slip sheet that fit the cardboard
carton sizes. All collies on slip sheets shall be loaded (in complete sets) into the same
container as shown below.

Note : 1) Same collie must be on the same slip sheet.

2) Container must be filled to maximum as much as possible.

Filling up the unused space

Loading of loose cardboard cartons into container (correct method)
When all cardboard cartons on slip sheets have been loaded into the containers, the remaining space
should be stuffed with loose cardboard cartons to maximize the container loading. It is very important
that the loose loaded cartons are placed in the same direction as the cartons on the slip sheets.
JYSK requires all loose cardboard cartons to be placed in the middle and on the top as shown
below.

Loading of loose cardboard cartons into container (wrong method)

When all cardboard cartons on slip sheets have been loaded into the containers, the remaining
space should be stuffed with loose cardboard cartons to maximize the container loading. Below
example is not allowed as the loose cardboard cartons are not placed in the middle.

The reason for placing loose cardboard cartons in the middle is to prevent the cardboard
cartons which are wrapped with plastic films from sticking together.

ISPM 15
To reduce the risk of introduction and/or spread of quarantine pests associated with wood packaging
materiel (including dunnage) of coniferous and non- coniferous raw wood, in use in international trade
we recommend to follow the instructions in ISPM 15 “Guidelines for regulating wood packing materiel in
international trade”. The agent/trader is responsible to ensure that all national rules are followed, and
to ensure that the packaging material is treated in the best possible way, to avoid quarantine pests
associated with wood.

How to place the boxes on pallets

In general the stacking of pallets should follow the instruction given for slipsheets

 Boxes should always be placed on the largest surface. This is to secure the best possible
stability.
 Packing height for pallets and slip sheets must be adjusted to the transportation units. However,
we reserve the right to make additional specific packing instructions for certain groups of
products.
 If the cardboard boxes cannot be kept within the dimensions of the pallet, for example furniture
boxes, contact the JYSK responsible so that other packing procedures can be implemented which
take the handling in our Distribution Centre’s into consideration.
 It is not acceptable to have any kind of loose wire ends or plastic ends on the outside of the
boxes.
 If the goods in the stack is within the measure 126x86 cm, it must be delivered on EUR-pallets.
Exceptions are only allowed after agreement with SCO@jysk.com
 In order to prevent transport damage, goods on pallets sheets should be packed as shown in the
following examples.

Example 1: Stabilizing with stretch film. Example 2: Bond stacking with Strapex

 The two examples contribute to ensuring greater stability which can be further improved by
means of paper sheets, “anti-sliding pads” or friction adhesive used between the individual
layers.
 By fixing the cardboard boxes with strapex long elements can be packed to ensure even greater
stability, only on the condition, however, that corner protectors are used under the bands.
 The most effective method is to use stretch film which also protects against dirt and water. It’s
only allowed to wrap the upper 2 cm of the pallet with the stretch film as shown below. The
space for the forklifts must be kept free in order to efficient handling.

Appendix Z

Examples of pallets with the goods fixed in a perfect way.

 It is not allowed to secure the goods on pallet or slipsheets with tape as below. Tape will cause
extra work in the distribution centers.

Pallets in trucks
Generally loose loaded trucks are not allowed. Therefore products must be placed on EUR pallets, one-
way pallets or slip sheets. Only the slip sheets are allowed to be stacked in more than one layer. An
exception from this has to be confirmed by Supply Chain Optimization on sco@jysk.com

Loading of pallets in trailer

When the articles doesn’t exceed the measurements of the EUR-pallets JYSK would prefer that pallets
are being loaded as below illustrated

Front end Rear end

of the of the
trailer trailer

Trailer lenght 13,6 meter

This pattern is to avoid damaged pallets during loading and unloading. The loading pattern should be 3
pallets per row with 10 rows = 30 pallets and then 2x2 pallets loaded across in the trailer = 4 pallets.
This makes a total of 34 pallets in a standard trailer.

Pallets in containers
 When loading products make sure that each pallet only contains one product number.
 If one way pallets are being used, make sure that the opening of the pallet is facing the rear
end/opening of the container.
 When the palletized cargo leaves excess space the supplier is requested to fill out the space with
loose collies. JYSK prefers that the loose collies are between the pallets rather than one side of
the container.

Appendix Z

Definition of a master box

A master box is only used for delivery to the distribution centers. This is to make the unloading of the
containers more efficient and to secure stable pallets in the high bays of the distribution centers. The
measurement of a master box is not allowed to exceed 126x86cm. If that is not possible, approval has
to be made by the SCO group sco@jysk.com a master box can be a traditional folded cardboard box
with or without a lid, a special built “pallet” for carpets, oil cloth, mirrors, parasols and the like.

The following measurements for master boxes are prioritized:

80x120x80 cm
80x120x100 cm
80x120x150 cm
80x120x200 cm

When to use a master box

If you need more than 8 handling units to fill one layer 120x80cm, or the height of the first layer does
not exceed 10cm, a master box should be used.
Product categories for which a master box is suitable: carpets, mirrors, parasols, home textiles in SDP,
tablecloths, small towels, small electrical products.
Each master box must be filled up or constructed so it is strong enough for stabile stacking in the
container. If the handling unit is in a cardboard box, the master box should as a starting point be 3 cm
lower than the top product. If this is not possible a lid should be used. The box has to be made of
kraftliners with a semi chemical C/C fluting.
The labeling of the master box should be as already stated in Supplier guideline.

First delivery with master boxes

The master box must always be approved by the SCO sco@jysk.com before first delivery. The first
delivery should be a test container according to appendix Z1 “Master for first shipment”.
If there is empty space in the container, is has to be filled up with loose collies.

Loose loaded in container

Only odd shaped products where the unutilized space will be significant are accepted as loose loaded in
the containers. All other products should be on either slip sheets, pallets or one way pallets.

Examples of odd shaped products

Go through the instruction strictly. JYSK reserves the right to invoice the costs associated with the extra
time used for unpacking to the supplier, if the supplier does not follow the instruction. Alternatively, the
amount will be deducted from the payment concerned or any future payment.

Moisture and condensation

The packing of containers and trucks must be made in consideration with any risk of
moisture/condensation damage meaning that any ventilation should be kept clear and dry bags should
be used if necessary.
It is by law not allowed to use dimethyl fumarate (DMF) as anti fungal agent in any types of consumer
products.
In case of moisture/condemn damage the Supplier will be issued a penalty that covers the cost for
damaged goods and working costs for sorting and repacking.

Special pallets for garden stacking chairs

 Some garden stacking chairs require a special steel pallet to secure a safe and easy
transport of the chairs and an efficient loading of the container.
 The pallet must fit exact to the chairs and not damage any of the chairs in the stack.
 The pallet must have 6 legs
 The pallet must be made in good quality steel (minimum 6kg) and must be painted or coated
to avoid staining of rust.
 The pallets must meet the minimum size requirements stated below to fit the pallet forklift.
 All the chairs must be stabilized with strapex closed with a plastic clip
 The first chair must be fixed with strips to the pallet
 The pallet has to be constructed so that the stack is as straight up as possible
