answer to each of the questions from 30 to 34.

Non-verbal communication is communication that occurs without words. It is body language and
environmental context involved in any communication. Non-verbal communication is different from person to
person and especially from one culture to another. Cultural background defines their non-verbal communication
as many forms of non-verbal communications like signs and signals are learned behavior.

As there are differences in meanings of non-verbal communication, miscommunication can occur when
inter-cultural people communicate. People can offend others without meaning to due to their cultural differences
in non-verbal communication. Facial expressions are mostly similar in most cultures as many of them like smile
and cry are innate. But it might also be different like the extent to which people show these feelings, in some
cultures people express openly and in some people do not.

Nods might also mean different things causing problems like when the person nods to say “yes”, other
people might understand it as a “no”. In Japan, when you nod, they can just take it as a signal that you are listening
to them. Western cultures mostly consider eye contact to be a good gesture. It shows attentiveness, confidence and
honesty. Other cultures such as Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic and Native American do not take it as a good
expression. It is taken as a rude and offensive expression. Some cultures take snapping fingers to get the attention
of a waiter as alright whereas some take it as disrespect and very offensive. Some cultures take pointing fingers as
insulting too. In Polynesia, people stick out their tongue to greet people which is taken as a sign of mockery in
most of other cultures.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 35 to 42.

Noise pollution, generally an unintended byproduct of urbanisation, transport and industry, is a key
characteristic of human development and population growth. In some cases, it is produced intentionally, for
example when seismic surveys are being carried out using powerful airgun arrays to explore and map the seafloor.
All of this noise – whether intentional or not – has the ability to alter the acoustic environment of aquatic and
terrestrial habitats.

The dramatic and comparatively recent rise in noise levels is marked in both magnitude and extent, with an
estimated 30% of the European population exposed to road traffic noise levels greater than 55dB (decibels) at
night, above the 40dB target recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Even remote natural areas
do not escape the reach of anthropogenic, or manmade, noise. Noise is not just irritating; it can have direct human
health impacts. Indeed, chronic exposure to noise levels above 55dB dramatically increases the risks of heart
disease and stroke, while aircraft noise has been shown to impact the development of reading skills in children
attending schools close to busy airports. The WHO estimates that in Europe at least a million healthy life years are
lost every year due to traffic noise.

Scientific interest in the effects of noise pollution on wildlife has intensified over the past decade and
scientists are now developing a better understanding of how noise can impact behaviour, population and
community level processes across a range of animal species. Using experimental and observational approaches to
characterise the specific effects of different noise sources, the evidence generated from these studies is
considerable, particularly among songbirds and marine mammals, which rely heavily on sound and vocal
communication.

The impacts are not just limited to marine mammals, considerable negative effects of noise are also
documented in marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates. These include recent studies that have demonstrated

compromised anti-predator behaviour in crabs and eels exposed to ship noise. In terrestrial habitats, bird diversity
and abundance has been shown to decline as a result of chronic noise levels around cities and along roadways. A
number of species have demonstrated adjustments to their vocal behaviour in an attempt to adapt to the cacophony
of human noise. Urban great tits for example, are able to raise the frequency of their calls to reduce acoustical
masking by predominantly low-frequency urban noise, while European robins adjust the timing of their singing to
coincide with quieter periods in the city. Meanwhile, black-chinned hummingbirds appear to actively select noisy
areas near active gas wells to avoid nest predation by more disturbance sensitive species.
