Cautions To ensure continued safe use of the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system, check all physical connections, including the
mouse, keyboard, power cord, display cable, and license key on a
regular basis. Also, regularly check the power LED on the display
to verify that it is receiving power.
If a display cable is loose or disconnected, the “Check video
cable” message appears on the display screen. After 1 minute, the
display LED turns yellow and the display goes into sleep mode.
Verify that the display cables are securely connected at the
display and the PC or contact your system administrator.
At installation, the display is configured for optimal viewing. Do

Notes
• Your system administrator can disable the Rename Bed/
Monitor setting, which prevents you from changing the
bed/monitor name at the Efficia CMS200; however, you
can still change the bed/monitor name at the bedside
monitor.
• If the Rename Bed/Monitor setting is enabled on your
system, use caution when renaming a bed/monitor at

safest way to rename the monitor is at the monitor itself
to ensure that the monitor name correctly identifies the
monitor to the Efficia CMS200. For information on
changing the monitor name at the monitor, see “Naming
the Monitor” on page 7-2.
• The Rename Bed/Monitor option is unavailable if the
monitor is off-line.

Expanding a Sector
The Patient Window provides an expanded view of the selected
sector in the bottom half of the page. All patient sectors are still
visible in the top half of the screen, but are compressed. The Patient
Window displays all numeric measurements, up to six waveforms,
and the following additional information, if sent from the bedside
monitor:
Warning If you select the Full Screen button in the Patient Window, the
window expands and displays up to 12 waveforms. In Full Screen
mode, all remaining patient sectors on the page are no longer
visible.

• If a parameter you choose to display on the Efficia
CMS200 central monitoring system is not supported on
the bedside monitor, that parameter displays no value
on the Efficia CMS200.
• Changes made to the sector layout in the Sector Setup
window are not replicated in the Patient Window. The
placement of waveforms and numerics in the sector may
be different from the layout in the Patient Window.
Most of the functions that you can access from a sector are also
available in the Patient Window, including:

sector size. For example, on a page that contains 16 sectors, the
sectors are proportionately smaller than the sectors on a page that
contains only 4 sectors. Therefore, the number of waveforms you
can display in the smaller sector is limited by the size of the sector.
The Sector Setup window is divided into two sections. Use the
Waveform Display Mode section to change the waveform layout and
use the Big Number Display Mode section to change the numeric
layout.

Caution Always verify that your patient’s pace detection setting at the
Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system accurately reflects the
patient’s status.
Warning For pacemaker patients, rate meters may continue to count the
pacemaker rate during occurrences of cardiac arrest or some
arrhythmias. Do not rely entirely upon heart rate meter alarm
signals. Keep pacemaker patients under close surveillance. See the
Instructions for Use for your bedside monitor for disclosure of the
pacemaker pulse rejection capability of this instrument.
Basic Operation

Warning It is very important that pace pulse detection is set correctly for the
patient you are monitoring. An incorrect pace pulse detection
setting will impact the effectiveness of the arrhythmia algorithm:
• If pace pulse detection is turned off for a patient with an
implanted pacemaker, the algorithm will not look for pace
pulses. As such, all the paced beats will not get classified
correctly because the pace pulses are not detected and used in
beat classification. While atrial paced beats may be classified
as Normal, Ventricular and AV paced beats may get classified
as PVCs and generate false PVC alarms. More important, if the
patient’s implanted pacemaker fails to capture, the arrhythmia
algorithm could mistake the pacer spikes as beats and
continue generating a heart rate and not alarm for pacer not
capture or asystole.
• If pace pulse detection is turned on for a patient without an
implanted pacemaker, the algorithm’s effectiveness in
detecting ventricular beats may be reduced because the
algorithm cannot use the compensatory pause information
following the PVCs for non-paced ECG in classification. This
may result in not receiving some PVC alarms.

Managing Patient Information
Patient ID Overview
This section describes the patient ID input fields and the patient list,
which appear in both the Admit Patient window and the Manage
Patient List window.
Patient ID Fields
Your system administrator configures the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system to display any or all of the following patient ID
fields in the Admit Patient window and the Manage Patient List
window:
• Patient Type
• MRN
• Transaction ID
• First Name
• Middle Name
• Last Name
• Age
• Date of Birth
• Gender
• Location ID
• Operator ID
• Admit Time
• Weight
• Height
• Department
Notes
• For information on the patient ID fields available on your
monitor, see the Instructions for Use for your bedside
monitor.
• The Admit Patient Menu and the Manage Patient List window
will contain either an Age input field or Date of Birth input
field, but not both.
The settings for displayed patient ID fields, primary ID, and required
fields are synchronized between the bedside monitor and the
Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system. The patient ID settings
at the Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system override the
settings at the bedside monitor.
The patient list in the Admit Patient window and the Manage Patient
List window displays all current and previously admitted patients. A
green row indicates that the patient is currently admitted and
assigned to a sector at the Efficia CMS200 central monitoring
system. The Bed/Monitor column displays the current bed/monitor
assignment. A white row indicates that the patient was previously
admitted, but is not currently assigned to a sector.
To change the column width, drag the column divider in the column
title bar.
When the number of the patient reaches the maximum, the system
deletes the oldest non-active patient.
Admitting a Patient
You can admit a patient at either the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system or the bedside monitor. When you admit a
patient at the Efficia CMS200, that patient is also admitted at the
bedside monitor.
When you start a new patient or discharge the previous patient, the
patient ID is displayed as ID Unknown at the monitor and at the
Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system until you admit the
patient.
The monitor does not require that you admit the patient before you
begin monitoring, so it is possible to collect and temporarily store
patient data for a patient with an ID of ID Unknown. During the admit
process, a message asks if you want to transfer the existing data to
the new patient ID. If you started monitoring the patient before
admitting the patient, select Yes to merge the data. If you did not
start monitoring the patient before admitting the patient, select No.
Considerations
Before entering information in the patient ID input fields in the Admit
Patient window, note the following:
• by using a keyboard.
• by using a standard barcode scanner to scan one patient ID at
a time.
• by using a programmed barcode scanner to transfer the
scanned information to the corresponding patient ID field.
Prior to using the barcode scanner, make sure you are familiar with
the barcodes used by the device.
1 In the sector in which you are going to admit the patient, verify that the
bed/monitor name is accurate.
Do one of the following:
• If the bed/monitor name is correct, go to step 2.
• To change the bed/monitor name, see “Renaming a Bed/Monitor” on
page 2-20. After changing the bed/monitor name, proceed to step 2.
2 Click in the patient ID section of the sector title bar, and then click Admit
Patient in the menu that appears.
The Admit Patient window opens. A list of saved patient IDs appears on
the left and the patient ID input fields appear on the right of the window.
3
Warning
Before you begin monitoring, make sure that the correct patient type is
selected. The default alarm limits and initial NBP inflation pressure are
based on the selected patient type.
Changes made to the patient type settings at the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system are sent to the bedside monitor.
The Admit Patient window closes. The patient is admitted to the selected
sector and the new patient ID is saved to the patient list. The new patient
ID is sent to the bedside monitor.
6 Verify that:
The patient’s NBP interval settings are correct. For more information
about NBP interval settings, see “Starting Bedside NBP Measurements
from the Efficia CMS200” on page 2-60.
• The patient’s paced setting is correct. The default Pace Detection
setting is On. For information about changing the Pace Detection
setting, see “Enabling Pace Pulse Detection” on page 2-36
• The alarm settings are appropriate for the patient.
A green patient ID in the patient list indicates that the patient is already
admitted to another sector at the Efficia CMS200 central monitoring
system.
5 Verify that:
• The patient’s NBP interval settings are correct. For more information
about NBP interval settings, see “Starting Bedside NBP
Measurements from the Efficia CMS200” on page 2-60.
• The patient’s paced setting is correct. The default Pace Detection
setting is On. For information about changing the Pace Detection
setting, see “Enabling Pace Pulse Detection” on page 2-36
• The alarm settings are appropriate for the patient.
Discharging a Patient
When you discharge a patient from the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system, the patient is discharged from the sector and
from the bedside monitor. The monitor stops collecting data for the
discharged patient and the patient ID changes to ID Unknown at the
Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system and at the bedside
monitor.
To discharge a patient:
1 Click the patient ID section of the sector for the patient you want to
discharge.
A message asks if you are sure you want to discharge the patient.
3 Click OK.
Transferring a Patient
To transfer a patient from one bed or monitor to a different bed or
monitor, you must discharge the patient from the current bed or
monitor and readmit the patient to a different bed or monitor.
When you discharge a patient, the patient ID and trend data are not
immediately deleted from the Efficia CMS200 database. The
patient ID and trend data for the discharged patient remains in the
Efficia CMS200 database for a minimum of 10 days, allowing you to
readmit or transfer the patient and the patient’s trend data to a
different bed or monitor.
To transfer a patient:
1 Click the patient ID section of the sector for the patient you want to
transfer.
A message asks if you are sure you want to discharge the patient.
3 Click OK.
The patient is discharged from the sector and the bedside monitor. The
patient ID and trend data remain in the Efficia CMS200 database.
4 In the sector in which you are going to readmit the patient, verify that the
bed/monitor name is accurate.
Do one of the following:
• If the bed/monitor name is correct, go to step 5.
• To change the bed/monitor name, see “Renaming a Bed/Monitor” on
page 2-20. After changing the bed/monitor name, proceed to step 5.
5 Click in the patient ID section of the sector title bar, and then click Admit
Patient in the menu that appears.
The Admit Patient window opens. A list of saved patient IDs appears on
the left and the patient ID input fields appear on the right of the window.
The Admit Patient window closes and the patient ID and trend data are
transferred to the selected sector. The new patient ID is sent to the
bedside monitor.
A dashed blue line appears in the Tabular, Graphical, and ECG trend
review tabs to indicate a gap in monitoring.
8 Verify that the patient’s NBP interval settings and pace detection settings
are correct.
Pre-Admitting Patients
Use the Manage Patient List window to pre-admit one or more
patients before you begin monitoring. The information you enter is
saved to the patient list so that you can admit the patient to a
sector at a later time.
The patient list database can store up to 1,000 patient IDs. If you try
to save more than 1,000 patient IDs, the system deletes the oldest
patient ID for a patient that is not currently admitted at the Efficia
CMS200 central monitoring system. The total number of patients
currently in the patient database appears in the upper right corner
of the Manage Patient List window.
The patient ID fields that appear in the Manage Patient List window
depend on how your system is configured. For more information,
see “Patient ID Overview” on page 3-1.
Considerations
Before entering information in the patient ID input fields in the
Manage Patient List window, note the following:
2
Warning
Before you begin monitoring, make sure that the correct patient type is
selected. The default alarm limits and initial NBP inflation pressure are

Alarms on the Efficia CMS200 are divided into three severity levels:
Alarms
Efficia CMS200 5-1
Visual Alarms
Warning Do not rely exclusively on the audible alarms from the Efficia
CMS200 central monitoring system for patient monitoring. The
most reliable method of patient monitoring requires correct
operation of all monitoring equipment and close observation of
the patient.
Respond immediately to all alarms, including technical alarms and
audible alarms from the license key. Some technical alarms
indicate that the patient is not currently being monitored.
Visual Alarms
The Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system provides the
following visual alarm indicators:
Alarms
5-2 Efficia CMS200
Visual Alarms
High Red
Medium Yellow
Low Blue
You can also view all alarms for all connected beds or monitors
from the View All Active Alarms window. For more information, see
“Viewing All Active Alarms” on page 5-11.
Viewing Alarms
The alarm list displays all active physiological and technical alarms
in the sector. The down arrow that appears at the top of the alarm
list flashes when a new alarm occurs. Each alarm in the list is color-
coded to match the highest alarm level in the sector. The alarm with
the highest priority appears at the top of the list. If there are
multiple high-priority alarms at one time, the alarm messages rotate
every 1.5 seconds.
The alarm list also contains the Silence Alarms option. When you
silence physiological alarms from the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system, the alarm messages continue to display in the
alarm list until the alarm condition is resolved. When you silence
bedside technical alarm messages from the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system, the alarm messages continue to display in the
alarm list until the alarm is acknowledged or corrected at the
bedside monitor.

Silencing Alarms
For the Efficia CM monitors running C.00 or above software, the re-
annunciation duration can be configured at the bedside monitor
using the Reminder Time setting.
Silencing alarms in a sector only silences the alarms for the selected
sector. Other alarming sectors must be silenced individually.

The differences in behavior between the No Data From Bed alarm and
other technical alarms include:
• The No Data from Bed message does not appear in the message
pane.
• When you select the Silence Alarms option in the alarm list, the
sector background does not remain blue. The background
changes from blue to black if there are no other active alarms
in the sector.
• When you select the Silence Alarms option in the alarm list, the
page button stops flashing and changes back to a black color
if there are no other active alarms on the page.

Audible Alarms
Audible Alarms
The alarm sound and interval depend on the alarm priority. High
priority alarms beep at a faster rate than the medium and low
priority alarms and also sound different. The Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system issues an audible alarm based on the highest
priority alarm of all connected monitors.
Warning Never silence an audible alarm or decrease the alarm volume if this
could compromise patient safety.
Set the alarm volume based on the environment and ambient noise
levels. Alarm volume should be tested and verified during
installation. The alarm volume should be loud enough to be heard
in the intended environment.
Periodically perform the audio test. See “Testing the Speaker” on
page 5-10.
Do not place objects that would obstruct alarm sounds on or near
the speaker/display.
Ensure the speaker is always operational and at a volume level that
is appropriate for the care area where the central will be used.
Periodically check the speaker LED to ensure that the speaker is
receiving power.
If you suspect that the speaker is not working, make sure the
speaker cables are securely connected and the speaker LED is lit. If
the problem is not corrected after you confirm that the cables are
connected, immediately contact your system administrator or
authorized service provider for repair.
The Philips medical display shipped with the Efficia CMS200 has
been tested and validated with the system. Speakers not supplied
by Philips Medizin Systeme Böblingen GmbH should meet the
minimum requirements listed in the Installation and Configuration
Guide in order to be used with the Efficia CMS200.
Alarm Tones
The Efficia CMS200 central monitoring system offers two sets of
alarm tones: Philips and IEC. Only authorized personnel can change
the alarm tone in the password-protected System Admin tab.

Changing Alarm Limits
Warning When changing alarm limits, do not use extreme alarm limit values,
which can cause the alarm system to be ineffective.
Be aware that the monitors in each care area may have different
alarm settings to suit different patients.
Always check that the alarm settings are appropriate for your
patient before you start monitoring. Reassess alarm limits
frequently and as the patient’s condition changes.
Notes
• If alarm limit changes are allowed at the Efficia CMS200
central monitoring system, but the alarm disable setting
at the bedside monitor does not allow users to disable
alarms, the alarm enable/disable icon is unavailable in
all numeric menus.
• Alarm settings in the Respiration Menu and awRR Menu are
monitor dependent:
• On the Efficia CM Series monitors, the Respiration
Menu and awRR Menu alarm settings can be changed
independently.
• On the Efficia CM Series monitors with Masimo
rainbow SET, the RRa Menu alarm settings can be
changed independently from RESP and awRR.
•On the SureSigns VM Series monitors, the Respiration
Menu and awRR Menu share alarm settings; changes
made in one menu impact alarm settings in both.
• For SureSigns VM monitors, the etCO2 Menu and the
imCO2 Menu share alarm disable settings; changing the
alarm disable setting in one menu impacts the setting in
both.
• For SureSigns VM4 monitors, predictive temperature
measurements do not have high and low alarm limits at
the bedside monitor. Therefore, the high and low alarm
limits are unavailable in the Temperature Menu at the
Efficia CMS200 for predictive temperature
measurements.

Admitting a Patient at the Bedside Monitor
You can admit a patient at either the bedside monitor or the Efficia
CMS200 central monitoring system. When you admit a patient at
the bedside monitor that is connected to the Efficia CMS200 central
monitoring system, that patient is also admitted at the Efficia
CMS200.
During the admit
process, a message ask if you want to transfer the existing data to
the new patient ID. If you started monitoring the patient before
admitting the patient, select Yes to merge the data. If you did not
start monitoring the patient before admitting the patient, select No.
