SAB 120-151-193-233-283-355 screw compressors

Guidelines for initial start-up
Commissioning guide, controls

1. Commissioning guide, controls

1.1. A guideline for initial start-up of the SAB 120, 151, 193, 233, 283 and
355 screw compressor unit

1.1.1. Control issues

The following instructions point out the main differences between the new Frick and the known
Sabroe unit design and give instructions as to how to prepare for initial start-up.
All the usual procedures concerning authorised supervision, safety checks and preparations
must be followed and carried out according to the manuals. This includes terminal checks, power
supply, configuration set-up, Multisab set-up (if applicable) etc.
Please study the specific product-related instructions and operating manuals. Manuals and
drawings such as GAs, P&I diagrams and electrical key diagrams can be downloaded from the
www.sabroe.com log in area.

1.1.2. Unisab III control system

The Unisab III will be equipped with the software version 1.0.7.6 (or newer) which is compatible
with earlier versions, meaning that all Multisab and load sharing facilities etc. are maintained.
Consult the corresponding manual for detailed information.

Functionality (below-mentioned settings are factory defaults):

1. Low lubrication pressure - securing oil to bearings.
Calculated difference between measured oil pressure PO2
and suction pressure (PS x 1.1).
Settings: 1.5 bar; Alarm after 25 seconds; Shutdown after 120 seconds.
Displayed alarm/Shutdown text: Low lube pressure.
2. Low oil pressure
Calculated difference between measured oil pressure PO2 and suction pressure PS.
Settings: Alarm 1.5 bar; Shutdown 1.0 bar.
Displayed alarm/shutdown text: Low oil pressure.
3. Insufficient main oil pressure – securing oil injection into rotor lobes.
Measured oil pressure PO2 has to be higher than suction pressure (PS x 1.5) + 1 bar.
If the main oil pressure PO2 is lower, and the capacity slide valve position is between
40 and 50% a capacity increase will be inhibited.
Displayed alarm text: Low main oil pressure.
If the main oil pressure PO2 is lower and the capacity is above 50% for more
than 180 seconds the compressor will be shut down.
Settings: Shutdown after 180 seconds.
Displayed shutdown text: Insufficient main oil pressure.
4. Low oil circuit pressure – security against high pressure drop in the total oil system.
Calculated difference between the discharge pressure
and the oil pressure (PD minus PO2).
Settings: Alarm > 2.7 bar for 10 minutes; Shutdown > 3.0 bar for 15 minutes.
Displayed alarm/shutdown text: Low oil circuit pressure.
5. Oil filter differential pressure (PO1 minus PO2)
Settings: Alarm 1.7 bar; Shutdown 2.0 bar; Max 4.0 bar.
Displayed alarm/shutdown text: High oil filter differential pressure.

6. Oil temperature (TO)
Settings: Alarm 70°C; Shutdown 75°C; Max 110°C.
Displayed alarm/shutdown text: High oil temperature.
7. Temperature control in oil separator by means of a PT 100 sensor.
Settings: Oil temperature 50°C +/-2°C.
No compressor start below 10°C.
Compressor shut down at 10°C.
Displayed shutdown text: Low oil separator temperature.
8. Liquid slugging control
Refrigerant in the compressor is detected as a rapid change in discharge temperature.
Settings: Alarm 5K drop within 5 seconds;
Shutdown more than 10K drop within 5 seconds.
Displayed alarm/shutdown text: Liquid slugging.
9. Oil separator velocity limitation
Limits the compressor capacity to prevent oil carry-over under off-design conditions.
Programmed from factory based on oil separator load under corresponding
design conditions. Can be disabled. Values vel. ref and vel. ref. CR can be found in the
operating manual.
Display alarm text: High separator flow.

10. Low oil level

Secures sufficient oil level in the oil reservoir, shuts down the compressor (30 second
delay) and powers off oil heater(s) at too low oil level
Displayed shutdown text: Oil system error.
11. LIOC control
The liquid injection proportionally operated valve is controlled by a 4-20 mA signal
according to the discharge temperature.
Options for single or dual port injection (dual port controlled by a double
Aacting-solenoid valve).
Setting: 65°C
Setting: High oil temperature alarm 77°C; Shutdown 82°C.
12. Slide valve unload assist
A function to be used for “pulling” the Vi and capacity slide apart if impossible to unload
the compressor.
The solenoids are activated to move slides in opposite directions.
Can be enabled or disabled.
