II. MODIFIED TRUE OR FALSE. Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If the statement is incorrect, underline the
word/s that makes it incorrect and change it to the correct word.
_________________11. A flash forward is an event that happened in the past.
_________________12. The use of signal devices is a technique writers utilize to add flavor and enrich the meaning of
their stories.
_________________13. One practical application of Causal Analysis as a mode of paragraph development is a Problem-
Solution type of paper.
_________________14. A fable is an example of a narrative text.
_________________15. The chronological arrangement is when the information found in a paragraph is arranged to
emphasize certain points depending on the writer’s purpose.

III. IDENTIFYING TOPIC SENTENCE. Underline the topic sentence in each paragraph.

16. The best trip my family ever took was to New Orleans, Louisiana. We drove there in two days. I didn’t think it would be very interesting, but I was
wrong. We saw the Mississippi River, rode a horse carriage in the French Quarter, and visited a cemetery where everyone was buried above the
ground. I liked the food best, especially the New Orleans doughnuts called beignets.

17. No one likes to eat with a dirty knife, fork, or spoon. It is important to completely wash all utensils before using them. Clean utensils won’t
transmit germs and bacteria. They also are more pleasant to eat with.

18. Many people think poetry is old-fashioned and uninteresting. They don’t realize that every time they hear a song sung, they are hearing poetry in
the form of song lyrics. Just like many written poems, many song lyrics use rhythm, rhyme, and literary imagery. It turns out that poetry isn’t old
fashioned; it’s as modern as the latest hit song!

19. Growing a garden can be fun, good exercise, and will provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the gardener. It is interesting to watch the seeds pop
their heads above the soil for the first time. It is sometimes hard to believe that a little seed can become a large vine or plant in just a few weeks.
Planting the seeds and pulling weeds are good exercise for anyone. Then, after watching the plant grow and produce, the gardener ends up with
delicious tomatoes, beans, or other yummy produce from the garden.

20. Sometimes it is hard to fall asleep. Maybe you are not sleepy, or maybe you are thinking about what happened during the day. You
can also lie awake if a big event, like a test or a party, is happening the next day. There are several things you can do to try and fall
asleep. You can try counting sheep, or just counting, which will keep your mind busy with a repetitious activity. Sometimes listening to
soft music or gentle sounds, like rain, helps. You can even try telling yourself a story, which may distract your mind enough that you will
be asleep in no time.

IV. SUPPORTING DETAILS. Underline the sentence that DOES NOT necessarily support the main idea of the paragraph.

21. Many biologists agree that appearance results from both heredity and environment. A study of twins, Lisa and Lori, serves as an
example of this. When they were children, people couldn’t tell Lisa and Lori apart. Lisa and Lori would play tricks on people. However,
as adults they look quite different. Even though they are genetically identical, Lisa looks much older than Lori.

22. Men are increasingly availing themselves of plastic surgery to enhance their appearance. They are becoming vain. More than 1.2
million men had cosmetic plastic surgery in 2004, representing 13 percent of the total cosmetic plastic surgery population. The number
of males having cosmetic plastic surgery procedures increased 16 percent from 2000 to 2004.
23. At age six, a child begins to separate herself from her family and to take her place as a responsible citizen of the outside world. This
act of separating includes many changes in behavior and attitude. She becomes more independent of her parents and often can get
impatient with them. Her parents will notice that their child will have physical changes in her as well. She is more concerned with what
other children say or do.

24. Some customs of the Japanese seem strange to us. And some of our ways appear strange to them. We sleep on soft pillows and
beds; they sleep on hard ones. We wash our faces and wipe them with dry with dry towels; they wipe their faces with wet towels. We
will find difficulty in learning their language. We lower our faces when we say grace; they raise theirs.

25. In Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, is a beautiful white marble building called the Lincoln Memorial. It was built by
the people of the United States to show their love for Abraham Lincoln. It would be great to see this personally. It took ten years to build
this Memorial, which stands on the bank of the Potomac River. Around the building are thirty-six tall columns.

V. CAUSE-EFFECT. Read the following passage and accomplish the table that follows. Write the cause/s on the left and the
effect/s on the right.

(26-29) Deadly chemical leaks are much more common in the United States than most people realize. According to recent reports from
the government, there are at least four serious leaks each day in the United States. The direct effects of this escape of chemicals into
the environment are devastating. In the last five years, because of toxic chemical leaks at least 135 deaths have occurred, an
estimated 4,700 injuries have resulted, and nearly 200,000 people have been forced from their homes.
Cause/s Effect/s

(30-35) Pristine lakes far from civilization are dying. Certain rivers and lakes in Canada can no longer sustain the fish that they once
could. Trees along the Camel’s Hump in Vermont’s Green Mountain are withering and dying. Many of the rivers and lakes in the Adiron
docks are nothing but lifeless bodies of water. And their quality in Boston and other eastern U.S. cities is getting worse almost daily. All
of this destruction to the environment can be linked to acid rain – the highly toxic form of air pollution released by power plants,
automobiles, and industrial smelters.

Cause/s Effect/s

narrative.
