BCE 3201 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS II (STEEL): COURSEWORK ASSIGNMENT 2:

QUESTION 1
Consider a steel column having loading and supporting arrangements as shown on the figure below.
Use Advance UKC section from steel S275. The vertical force F consists of two components:
Permanent load 𝐺𝑘 and live load 𝑄𝑘 which are unfactored. It is laterally restrained at top and bottom
with respect to buckling about Y-Y and Z-Z axes. Produce a detailed calculation note that includes:
a) Design load;
b) Selection of an economic steel column section and give all detailed information about the section
properties;
c) Check the resistance on compression;
d) Check the buckling resistance of the section

F is applied at the centre of gravity of the section

QUESTION 2

A column of 203 x 203 x 60 UKC S275 Steel is proposed to resist the compression force from the
beams as shown in fig below (Factored loads).
a) Calculate the total axial load 𝑁𝐸𝑑 and bending moment 𝑀𝑦,𝐸𝑑 and 𝑀𝑧,𝐸𝑑 to be carried out by
the column between level 1 and level 2 (Please included self-weight of the column)
b) Classify the proposed section
c) Check the adequacy of the column using simple construction method
