TABLE TENNIS (INDIVIDUAL SPORT)
Also known as ‘ping pong’ is one of the most popular games in the world.

It is a ball game in principle to lawn tennis and played on a flat table divided into two equal courts by a net
that is fixed across its width at the middle.

HISTORY/BACKGROUND
 In the 12th century, the game of table tennis probably descended from the game of Royal Tennis,
which was also played in the medieval era. During 1880s, some sources claimed that the sport was
once known as indoor tennis, and was played in the early 1880s by British Army officers stationed in
India and South Africa.
 They used cigar box lids as paddles, round wine bottle corks as balls and books for an improvised
net.
 The game became fashionable among the upper classes in England. In 1890, the earliest existing
evidence of the table tennis games in a set made by David Foster, patented in England, which-
included table version of Lawn Tennis, Cricket and Football.
 The name Ping Pong was derived from the sound suggested Ping, then lower pitch is Pong.
 The Parker Brothers produced Ping Pong Game to the United States. With a slow class of the
equipment, the game continued to grow in the popularity and the first tournament was in 1902.
 In 1921, the table tennis association was founded in England.
 In the latter part of the year 2000, the international body governing the rules of table tennis
introduced more changes. They decided to increased the size of the plastic ball used in tournament
from 38mm to 40mm. This was attempt to slow the game down a little.
 Table Tennis is governed by the ITTF or the International Table Tennis Federation. It was founded in
1926. ITTF currently include in 217 members associations. The table tennis official rules are
specified in the ITTF book. Since 1988, table tennis has been an Olympic sport with several event
categories in particular from 1988 until 2004, these were men’s single, women’s single, men’s
double and women’s double.
 Since 2008, a team event has been played instead of the double. In 2007, the governance for table
tennis for persons with disability was transferred from the International Paralympics Committee to
the International Table Tennis Federation.

RACKETS/PADDLES-Made of wood and covered with rubber on both sides. BALL- Typically made of
celluloid or plastic, with a diameter of 40 mm.

RULES
GAMES ARE PLAYED TO 11 POINTS.
ALTERNATE SERVES EVERY TWO POINTS.
TOSS THE BALL STRAIGHT UP WHEN SERVING.
THE SERVE CAN LAND ANYWHERE IN SINGLES.
A SERVE THAT TOUCHES THE BNET ON THE WAY OVER IS A “LET”.

indicate the next server with an open hand. This may be followed by the name of the next server, which
should be determined before the commencement of the event so that all umpires at the event work in
unison.
LET- When the umpire announces a let, he or she should raise one hand over their heads. When making a
decision within his or her power, the assistant umpire should use the same hand motion to bring the
attention of the umpire.
AWARDING a POINT-The umpire must elevate their arm on the side closest to the point winner such that
their closed hand is facing up, their upper arm is horizontal, and their forearm is vertical.

TRIVIAS
TABLE TENNIS INSPIRED PEACEMAKING.
In 1971, during the world table tennis championships, two players from the opposing countries were kind
to one another. Instead of seeing the other with suspicion, they exchanged gifts. This interaction brought
Chinese Chairman Mao to extend an invitation to the U.S table tennis team. He gave them an all-expenses-
paid trip to China. From there, ties between the United States and China were able to heal after many years
of suspicions.
PROFESSIONALS HIT THE BALL AT AMAZING SPEEDS
In 1993, players Lisa Lomas and Jackie Bellinger set the fastest record of hitting the ball back and
forth across the table. In a mere 60 seconds, they hit it 173 times and 3 hits per second.
THERE ARE OVER 1,500 RUBBER PATTERNS.
The rubber patterns on the racquet are more than for show. Certain patterns give players the ability
to control their hits in certain ways. One style of rubber is never quite like any other.
TABLE TENNIS IS AN OLYMPIC SPORT.
Becoming an official Olympic sport is a recent accomplishment for table tennis. Professionals played
the first Olympic table tennis matches in 1988, during the Summer Olympics.
IT’S A GAME OF MANY NAMES.
It hasn’t always been called by its official tourney name of table tennis. It’s often called ping pong, for
example. Though some people alter the rules of ping pong depending on who’s playing.
