Placement Test can be used as a diagnostic test at the start of the year, reviewing learning from the
previous year and helping to assess students’ ability. If students score about 60%, we suggest they start
with Level 4. If less than 60%, they should start with Level 3, or if that’s not possible, some remedial
work may be required to help them.

Speaking notes
The following marking criteria and evaluation scales will help you mark the speaking tasks consistently
and give students meaningful feedback.

Marking criteria
• 0–2 marks for the range of language used (structures and vocabulary).
• 0–1 marks for accuracy of expression.
• 0–1 marks for fluency.
• 0–1 marks for pronunciation.

Placement Test
Students can work in pairs or with the teacher or classroom assistant. Point to the speech bubbles and
tell them they can use these to help. Tell students to take turns speaking.
