advised to check any injectors which have
been updated with injector nozzle-body
kits delivered since January 2020.
The main injector design update may lead
to cross-contamination of the system oil
and fuel systems when new nozzle-body
kits are installed on older injector bodies.

Solution
To prevent possible cross-contamination
between system oil and fuel systems, fuel
injectors must be checked and upgraded as
described in the following chapters from
WinGD.

1 Potential for mismatched parts

Woodward-L’Orange produced injectors for WinGD medium-bore engines with three different injector-type
codes until mid-2017, when they were superseded by type VWO-U10008. Earlier injector types are
characterised by two open holes at the bottom of the main injector housing (where the main injector
housing meets the valve plate of the nozzle-body module). To see the holes, it is necessary to remove the
nozzle-body module from the main injector housing and inspect the bottom face of the injector housing.

Letter SL-0027
The two open holes were sealed metallically against two raised surfaces of the valve plate, which is part
of the nozzle-body kit with the spare part code “BX 96144” (example for X72). The newer injector body
type, VWO-U10008, does not have these holes and therefore does not require sealing with the raised
sections shown below in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Top view of older valve plate showing two raised sections to seal corresponding holes in the
injector housing

These raised sections were mistakenly removed from the valve plates of the new nozzle-body kits
(delivered since January 2020). The new valve plate can be seen below in Figure 3.

2 Affected engines
As a rule, engines shoptested in 2018 or later will not be affected, but WinGD strongly recommends that
all injectors are checked, including spare injectors, on all vessels.

All injectors are marked VWO-G005CV2, VWO-G005OV2, VWO-UO29V1, VWO-U10006 or VWO-U10008:

• All injectors marked VWO-G005CV2, VWO-G005OV2 or VWO-UO29V1 have the holes shown in
Figure 1
• Injectors marked VWO-G005CV2, VWO-G005OV2 or VWO-UO29V1, which have had a new nozzle-
body kit installed since January 2020 are especially at risk
• A small number of new injectors marked VWO-U10008 are also affected, these injectors have
serial numbers between (inclusive):
o 1813085 and 1813094
o 1813126 and 1813146
o 1830688 and 1830697
o 1833201 and 1833203
In most of these 44 cases, WinGD will contact affected operators directly. However, the
10 units shown in bold were sold as spare injectors
• Injectors marked VWO-G005CV2, VWO-G005OV2 or VWO-UO29V1 which have been serviced by
Woodward-L’Orange in Germany since mid-2017 have been plugged already
• Affected injectors have already been plugged on some vessels

Also, in cases where older valve plates are being used (see Figure 2), WinGD strongly recommends that
operators plug and label affected injector bodies.

Injector markings are clearly visible without removing the injector from the engine, but a mirror may help
as the markings face toward the exhaust valve cage. Figure 4 below was taken on an installed injector,
clearly showing the newer injector type code.

3 How to update affected injectors

Woodward-L’Orange has produced a special repair kit, VWO-U10014, to plug the holes of injector bodies
found as shown in Figure 1. After plugging the holes, such injectors can be used without restriction. A
detailed description of this kit and its use is provided in Appendix A to this Service Letter.

Each VWO-U10014 repair kit contains enough plugs for a complete engine, including spare injectors.

WinGD strongly recommends marking modified injector bodies with a ‘M’ as shown in Appendix A. This
will simplify future identification.

4 Contacting Woodward-L’Orange
Repair kit VWO-U10014 can be obtained by contacting Woodward-L’Orange directly at the following
e-mail address. The kit will be provided free of charge:

Parts for conversion

For blinding lube oil bore holes you need:

Ø = 3.5 mm Ø = 3.0 mm

1. Injector housing from injector VWO-U029V1

2. 1 pcs. 3.0 mm König-Expander (violet)
3. 1 pcs. 3.5 mm König-Expander (orange)
4. Rivet gun with 2 pcs. modified insert (1x spare)
5. Gloves to avoid rust (not included in spare part set)

Conversion description

Note:
The injector nozzle body module must be removed using
the injector test rig as described in WinGD's
maintenance manual and service letter RT-198 (L'Orange
Fuel Injection Valves). The control element/pilot valve
Ø = 3.5 mm Ø = 3.0 mm
can remain in the injector housing.

1. Screw the insert into the rivet gun. If necessary, you

have two inserts with each rivet gun (1 spare)

„König-Expander“ 2. First put „König-Expander Ø 3.0 mm (violet)“ into the

Ø 3.0 mm in insert rivet gun.

5 | LOTS, WEBER & BAUER | 29.01.2021 INTERN / INTERNAL

Conversion description 3. Insert the „König-Expander Ø 3.0 mm (violet)“ into
the lube oil bore hole Ø 3 mm together with the rivet
gun as shown.

Note:
a. The rivet gun must not be crooked during the riveting
process. The angle of the plug axis (rivet gun insert)
to the surface of injector housing must be 90 °.
b. Push the rivet gun downwards onto the injector
housing, as shown at left. There is a small protrusion
(nose) on the rivet gun insert, it fits inside the lube oil
bore holes to avoid a protruding plug.
Polished surface of c. If a plug protrudes after riveting and a new type
injector housing injector nozzle body kit is to be used, a maximum
protrusion of 0.2 mm is allowed. If an old type
injector nozzle body kit is to be used, no protrusion is
90 ° allowed.

Conversion description

4. Repeat steps 1-3 with „König-Expander Ø 3.5 mm

5. Woodward L´Orange strongly recommends to stamp

modified injectors with an ‚M‘ as shown at left, to
ensure future identification of modified injectors,
also for attending service engineers.
