This exercise wil take you through some of the unique aspects of dramatic Iteratue:calogue,sollaquies, monologues, asides, and stage directions. This will help you understand more about how dramatic iteratureis constructed, making it easier for you to understand the action ofthe ply. Shakespeare clearly wanted the auelience to be involved in the action of the play. By writing in so many asides, we can learn about everyone's state of mind, especially Macbeths. These asides add a sense of excitement, Involvement, and suspense, as the audience learns more about each character and how their minds work. 2. In your own words, explain the difference between monologues and soliloquies. Monologues are long speeches within a play. Solloquies are long speeches given by a character when he or she's alone or thinks he or she is alone. These are the character's inner thoughts spoken aloud. 3. Why do you think Shakespeare did not include more details in the stage directions, i. why didn't he \luce when a character walks across the stage or sits down, etc.? | think thatthe real value of Shakespeare's play isin the words that are spoken. When a character absolutely ‘needs stage directions they are ether given as stage direction, or they can be found in the words the characters speak. Its upto the director and the actors to Interpret how and when a character would naturally ‘move, given the spoken text. 4, How can you tell te difference between an aside anda soliloquy? {A solloguy isa long speech given by a character when he or she is alone Or thinks he or she is alone on stage. These are the characters inner thoughts spoken aloud, Inan aside, a character is speaking so thatthe audience can hear, but the character knows he/she i not alone on stage. The character may still think his or her Inner thoughts, but thereisstill an awareness of the other characters onstage. ‘ir oa nrparcon| RGR Mood is the atmosphere or emotional state created by a piece of literature. The words and sentence structure that a writer uses can contribute to the mood of a piece of work. Shakespeare immediately creates a mood of ‘mystery and fear from the very first moment the witches appear on stage in Act One, ‘Mood is usually described in expressions of feeling and emotions, such as fear, anger, hatred, unease, loneliness, confusion or jealousy, to Part A name a few. Itis the feeling a reader gets from reading the text. To help identify the mood, ask yourself, “How does Shakespeare want me to feel after reading this (line, passage, scene, etc)? First, list 10 different moods (do not use the ‘ones that have already been mentioned) in the space below. Challenge yourself to avoid happy’ and “sad” and to find better adjectives ‘such as “ecstatic” or“gloomy.” Directions: For the following excerpts from Act One, use your list to help you identify the mood that Shakespeare is attempting to create. Also, underline the words (context clues) from the quote that contribute to the mood. An example has been done for you.
