focuses mainly on languages and sciences.
Pre-primary
Children study in kindergartens or colleges from the age of three to four, and then they study preparatory
school at the age of five, where the tutors prepare them for school, where they study the letters without
depth, numbers, and colors, and they are taught short surahs from the Holy Qur’an.
Primary education
It extends over 6 years and the student studies
There are two types of preparatory schools: model and regular. Those who study in model preparatory schools
are distinguished by studying physics in French, and media is taught in English. Entry is through holding a sixth-
year debate, and a certain number of students, known as elite, are taken in each state except for the state of
Tunisia, which consists of two education delegations. Therefore, students are directed to the nearest model
preparatory school (there are 5 in the Greater Tunis region) from the student’s residence, taking into account
the school’s capacity and the student’s ranking among the successful students. For model preparatory schools,
promotion is conditional on the student obtaining a grade point average of 13 or higher in the following
subjects: mathematics, Arabic, and French. However, if the rate is less than 13, the student is redirected to a
regular preparatory school.
Technical Preparatory School
Technical preparatory school is the second opportunity for students who have not excelled in their studies,
and they receive practical subjects there, as they study carpentry, sewing, and many other subjects. Every
Tunisian student has the right to repeat the year for two years in primary school and two years in basic and
preparatory education, or two years in one year, or three years in school before. Entering vocational training,
the student has the right to continue his studies by passing the technical education competition. They are
allowed to study in regular institutes if they succeed or complete their training and work. The subjects that are
passed in the competition are Arabic composition, French, English, mathematics, and physics.

Secondary education: The study lasts 4 years, culminating in obtaining the baccalaureate (general
secondary school).

baccalaureate (high school) or a certificate recognized as equivalent, according to general conditions set by
decree and special rules within each institution set by a joint decision of the Minister of Education, Higher
Education and Scientific Research and the concerned minister in accordance with Chapter 13 of Law No. 70.
For the year 1989, dated July 28, 1989, relating to higher education and scientific research (and its
amendments).
Institutions of higher education and scientific research may register in certain training courses persons who
meet the competency requirements that are equivalent to the baccalaureate and which are determined by
decree.
