Technological development is progressing rapidly.

It has a major impact on our professional

and private lives. In our private lives, technology influences how we spend our free time,
communicate with each other, and our relationships. Although there are many positive
aspects, the negative aspects should not be ignored.

First of all, digitalisation is causing many families to spend less time together. Instead of
going to the museum together when it rains, every family member spends time on social
media with their smartphone. In my experience, digital entertainment, which is available
24/7, results in fewer family activities being undertaken together.

Secondly, even though smartphones allow people to communicate with each other
regardless of time and place, which is a great advantage, digital communication in families
often leads to misunderstandings. Important topics are discussed via whats app and not in
person or at least by phone call.

Thirdly, the different needs around technology and social media can become a major point
of conflict between parents and children. While parents are usually interested in their
children's use of technology in a controlled and responsible manner, the majority of
children's lives take place virtually on social media. For both sides, dealing with technology is
associated with stress, which is likely to have an overall negative impact on their
relationship.

Overall, technology brings many advantages in both professional and private life.
Nevertheless, the majority of these developments are likely to have a negative impact on the
family context. In future, it will be important to take advantage of the positive benefits and
minimise the negative aspects of everyday family life through clear rules and boundaries.
