Setup

with The Norwegians

Note: There is no specific layout of where each component/supply/board/etc. should go. The term “central play
area” will be used to describe the general area in which the group can decide how to organize everything.
1. Place the 3 separate action boards in a column, from top to bottom, Build Houses, Weekly Market, and
Sailing. (See left.) Use the sides corresponding to the number of players, as shown in the bottom-right corner
of each action board.
2. Take out the special tiles (gray) and the 2 oval special tiles supply boards.
3. Separate out the 6 special tiles with both a forge tongs symbol and a sword value of <9: crucifix,
pan, sickle, cloakpin, sword, and helmet (1 side is missing the forge tongs symbol). (See right.)
4. Place these 6 special tiles on the smaller special tiles supply board.
5. Use the backside of the base-game special tiles supply board and place the remaining special
tiles in their respective areas, dark gray=forgeable and light gray=non-forgeable.
6. Place the supply board for ships in the central play area.
7. Place the 3 types of ships (whaling boats, knarrs, and longships) and the small emigration tiles on their spaces
on the ship supply board. Note: All ships and small emigration tiles are considered unlimited.
8. Create a supply of wood, stone, ore, and silver in the central play area. Note: All are considered unlimited.
Multipliers are printed on the back of the Thing penalty markers.
9. Shuffle the 8 mountain strips from the base game and place them face down in a stack.
10. Set the longer mountain strip from the Norwegians expansion to the side to use in round 7.
11. Flip over 2 mountain strips (3 in a 4-player game) and load them with the depicted resources.
12. Exploration boards: Uwe says the group can decide which/how many boards to play with, including all of
them. Otherwise, lay out the 4 Norwegians exploration boards on their sides with the letter showing in the
bottom-right corner: Isle of Man, Isle of Skye, Outer Hebrides, and Islay.
• In a 2-player game, no other exploration boards are added.
• In a 3-player game, add 2 exploration boards from the base game, either A (Shetland) or B (Faroe Islands)
and either C (Iceland) or D (Greenland).
• In a 4-player game, add all 4 exploration boards from the base game: Shetland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, and
Greenland.
• Optionally, add Lofoten and Tierra del Fuego from Mini Expansion #1 and/or Isle of Mull from ME #2.
13. Place the sheds, stone houses, and long houses in separate piles in the central play area. Note: The number of
sheds and houses is piece limited.
14. Give each player a random artisan shed. Note: This shed will need to be built during the game. Either side may
be chosen at that point.
15. Separate the occupation cards into a light brown deck and a dark brown deck and shuffle each deck separately.
Note for beginners: The rulebook recommends playing with just the A deck. The bottom-right corner of the card
shows which deck it belongs to: A, B, or C.
16. Deal each player 2 light brown occupation cards. Each player picks 1 and discards the other.
17. Return discarded and unused light brown occupation cards to the box.
18. Place the dark brown occupation cards face down in the central play area.
19. Place the victory point tokens in the central play area.
20. Take out the weapons cards and give each player 1 “bow and arrow,” 1 “snare,” and 1 “spear.”
21. Shuffle the remaining weapons cards and place them in a face-down deck in the central play area. Note:
Weapons are considered unlimited. If the weapons deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile. If owed an unavailable
weapon type, use a Thing penalty marker as a multiplier for 3 of that type of weapon.
22. Place the 3 goods boxes in the central play area. Note: All goods tiles are considered unlimited.
23. Give each player 1 “mead” goods tile.
24. Give each player 1 home board. Use the side for the 7-round game. The banquet table track in the upper-right
corner should have numbers 1-7 (not 1-6). (See right.)
25. Give each player 12 vikings of one color.
26. Place 1 viking on each of the numbered spaces 1-7 on the banquet
table track.
27. Place the remaining 5 vikings in the “Thing Square” in the center of the home board.
28. Place the round overview tile in the central play area with the white-colored cube on the .
