LESSON 1 Learning Competency 76

Visualizes circumference of a circle.

Get an empty can or a canister. The top of the can represents a
circle. Wind a strip of paper, ribbon or string once around the can. The
length of the piece of ribbon/ string/ paper is the distance around the
circle.

The distance around a circle is called circumference. It is the

total distance or the actual length around the circle. It is actually the
perimeter of the circle. Only a cicle is not made up of line segments but
of arcs.

What is the relationship between the circumference and the

length of a diameter of a circle?

Now, measure the circumference of three different corns by using a

piece of string and a ruler. Then, measure the diameter and record the
data in the table.

Divide the circumference by the corresponding diameter to complete the

table.

LESSON 3 Learning Competency 78

Derives a formula in finding the circumference of a circle.

To find the circumference of a circle, the value of π is multiplied by the

diameter. Since the diameter is twice the length of the diameter. Since the
diameter is twice the length of the radius, the circumference can also be
obtained when the radius is given.
Since circumference ÷ diameter = π, c ÷ d = π then we can find the
circumference C by multiplying π and diameter ( d ).

c÷d=π
c=πxd

For any circle, the radius ( r ) is one – half the diameter, so

r = 1/2 x d or d = 2 x r c = π x 2 x r or
c = 2 x π x r or c = 2 π r

We can replace d with 2 r to find c.

Now, look at this example.

To find the circumference of a circle with a diameter of 6 cm, we compute as
follows.

c= π xd to compute:
c = circumference c = 3.14 x 6 cm
π (pi) = 3.14 c = 18.84 cm
d = diameter

or we can solve it this way.

c=
c=2xπxr
c = 2 x 3.14 x 3 cm 1/2 of the diameter 6 cm = 3 cm
c = 18.84

Here’s another example.

What is the circumference of a circle with radius 2 cm?
What formula will you use?
So, we use the formula:
C = 2 π or 2 x π x R

Circumference 2 x 3.14 x 2

pi radius

For convenience, we will use π = 3.14 instead of
7
Now, do these. Find a formula to use for these given data to find
the circumference of a circle.

1. d = 14 cm 2. π = 3.14 3. π = 3.14
π = 3.14 d = 15 r = 7 cm

LESSON 4 Learning Competency 79

Finds the circumference of a circle.

Now, we are going to study how to find the circumference of a circle when
the diameter is given.

Circumference is the distance around a circle.

The broken lines ( ) in the illustration represent the circumference. To find

the circumference when the diameter is given, we use the formula C = π x d,
Where:
C = circumference
π= 3.14 ( a constant ), pi
d = diameter

Remember:

4 constant is a fixed number. If does not change. 3.14 is constant, representing

pi.

Here is a circle. Find the circumference using the formula C = π x d.

π = 3.14
d = 2 cm. d = 2 cm
C = 3.14 x 2
C = 6.28 cm

Using the formula C = π x d find the circumference of the following circle:

Given:
π = 3.14
d = 4 cm
C = ____ x ____
C = ____

ARE READY FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION.

Summary:
 In this module, you learned the different parts of a circle, the diameter, radius
and the arc. You have also learned to measure circumference of a circle and
derives a formula in finding the circumference of a circle.
Example: To find the circumference, multiply the diameter with π
If d = 10 m
c =πxd
c = 3.14 x 10 m
= 31.40 m
 You have learned, too to find the circumference of a circle.
Example. What is the circumference of a circle with a radius 2 cm?
What is the diameter?
C=2xπxr
C = 2 x 3.14 x 2 cm
= 12.56 cm
Since the radius of a circle is half of its diameter, then the diameter is
twice the radius. So, the diameter is 2 x 2 = 4 diameter.
 You learned to solve routine and non-routine problems involving
circumference of a circle.
Ex. Find the circumference of two fishponds whose radius and
diameter is 7m and 10 m.

Different ways to find circumference

Way 1 Find the circumference Way 2 Find the circumference,
using C = 2 π r using C = π d
=2xπx7 C=π
7m
=2x7xπ = 10 x 3.14

Solution: The fishpond with a radius of 7m has a circumference of about 44m.

The pond with the diameter of 10m has a circumference of about
31.4m.
