energy that can be harnessed from the motion of the waves. There are several methods of harnessing wave energy that involve placing electricity generators on the surface of the ocean.
HOW DOES WAVE ENERGY WORK?
Wave energy varies with lunar cycles, tides,
winds, and weather, affecting wave size and strength. Waves generate kinetic energy through movement, which can power turbines to produce electricity. Various methods, such as utilizing wave oscillations to drive pistons or turbines, are employed to harness wave energy efficiently.
WAVE ENERGY A RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE
Similar to solar, wind, and geothermal energy,
wave energy is a renewable source, relying on the perpetual movements of the Earth and moon. As long as these celestial motions persist, waves will remain a reliable source of kinetic energy. Moreover, wave energy generates fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels like coal or oil, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
EXAMPLE
Tidal energy stems from the gravitational pull of
tidal waves, generating currents in oceans. The attraction leads to a temporary rise in water levels, forming tides as the Earth's rotation interacts with shallow coastal areas. This cyclical process repeats due to the moon's orbit around the Earth.
WAVE ENERGY IN THAILAND.
Thailand's 1,660-kilometer coastline along the
Gulf of Thailand yields a wave density of only 10 to 20 kilowatts per meter, falling short of the 40 to 60 kilowatts per meter considered optimal for efficient electricity generation from sea waves. Given this low wave density, tidal energy might be a more viable option if electricity generation were pursued.
