RECURRING DECIMALS

Sometimes when you change a fraction into a decimal by dividing the

numerator by the denominator, the digits after the decimal point make a
pattern of digits that recurs. These decimels are called recurring decimals.

.
We use the symbol “ ” to show that a digit recurs.

1
Ex : Divide the numerator by the denominator to
3
change it into a decimal.

0.3333.....
3 recurs. So put a single dot
3 10 above it.

MULTIPLICATION OF DECIMALS

Ex : 1.752 x 0.23

Remove the decimal points to make new whole numbers.

1752
x 23
5256
+ 3504
40296 Count the total number of decimal places in the
given numbers and then write the decimal point so
that the answer has the same total number of
decimal places.

1.752 has 3 decimal places,

1.752 x 0.23 = 0.40296 0.23 has 2 decimal places.
So, the answer must have 5 decimal places.

Ex : Work out 4.25 x 0.18

DIVISION OF DECIMALS

Ex : 2.345 ÷ 0.05

Multiply the dividing number by a power of 10 so that it becomes a

whole number. Multiply the number to be divided by the same
power of 10.
