OUTDOOR AND ADVENTURE
EDUCATION

What is outdoor education?

Outdoor education is organized learning that takes place in the
outdoors. Outdoor education programs sometimes involve residential
or journey wilderness-based experiences in which students participate in
a variety of adventurous challenges and outdoor activities such
as hiking, climbing, canoeing, ropes courses and group games. Outdoor
education draws upon the philosophy, theory, and practices
of experiential education and environmental education.
Outdoor education can be simply defined as experiential
learning in, for, or about the outdoors. The term 'outdoor education',
however, is used broadly to refer to a range of organized activities that
take place in a variety of ways in predominantly outdoor environments.
Common definitions of outdoor education are difficult to achieve because
interpretations vary according to culture, philosophy, and local
conditions.
Outdoor education is often referred to as synonymous with outdoor
learning, outdoor school, forest schools and wilderness education.
Outdoor education often uses or draws upon related elements and/or
informs related areas. The hallmark of outdoor education is its focus on
the "outdoor" side of this education; whereas adventure education would
focus on the adventure side and environmental education would focus on
environmental. Expeditionary education involves expeditions into
wilderness "where man is but a visitor." All of these activities typically
involve experiential education.
Outdoor education is often used as a means to create a deeper
sense of place for people in a community. Sense of place is manifested
through the understanding and connection that one has with the area in
which they reside. Sense of place is an important aspect of
environmentalism as well as environmental justice because it makes the
importance of sustaining a particular ecosystem that much more
personal to an individual.

Education outside the classroom

"Education outside the classroom" describes school curriculum learning,
other than with a class of students sitting in a room with a teacher and books. It
encompasses biology field trips and searching for insects in the school garden,
as well as indoor activities like observing stock control in a local shop, or visiting
a museum. It is a concept currently enjoying a revival because of the recognition
of benefits from the more active style.

Importance of outdoor Education

 Outdoor education gives depth to the curriculum and makes an
important contribution to students physical personal and social
education (why is outdoor education important)?
 It allows students to experience a different learning style by being
in a different learning style by being in a different environment and
using different skills.

 Better Health:
Every part of our body needs to be energized and outdoor play
definitely caters to that, thus leading to better health of
learners. Studies have revealed that outdoor education can be
a key factor in avoiding childhood obesity. It helps learners be
in natural surroundings that develop their senses and leads
to physiological and psychological growth.

 Increased Motivation:
Kids of any age naturally have the need to move around.
Sufficient amount of physical activities outdoors freshens the
mind and body. Thereafter, children are happy, motivated
and relaxed to do activities indoors. They can focus better on
the task at hand as play stimulates the neural connections in
the brain and helps in regulating emotions, making plans and
solving problems.

 Enhanced Communication and Socio-

Emotional Skills:
Outdoor education calls for collaboration and team building
tasks. Children learn to communicate with each other,
problem solve and build healthy relationships. It gives them
the space to explore, discover and think freely, thus reduce
barriers to communication.

 Improved Memory and Imagination:

Spending time in a fixed environment or lighting throughout
the day create a fixed pattern, however, moving outdoors for
some time opens up a world of fresh stimuli, resulting in
making better connections to learning and improve the power
of recall and retention.
 Better Overall Behavior And Reduced Stress
Levels:
Children and young adults are constantly growing, changing
and evolving, having to deal with many things at a time.
Outdoor education allows them to build essential life skills
and better coping mechanisms. For example, while playing a
sport/game, failure/ inability to do a task well teaches one to
understand the cause for the same and helps one stand up
on the feet to try again. Seeking support and cooperation from
the peers and facilitators creates a positive outlook and
reduces anxiety/stress.

 Co-curricular Activities:
Right from the Pre-primary years, to primary, middle school,
secondary and higher secondary, learners are exposed to
different activities at each grade as per the age and
developmental stage of the children. There are outdoor
activities like Physical Education, Gymnastics, Swimming,
Skating, Cricket, Football, Basketball, and many more that
are a part of the curriculum and are spread across the week
such that every day the learners have at least 1 or 2 outdoor
games to indulge in.

 Field Trips/Edu Tours and Excursions

We believe that learners should acquire practical knowledge
at every step; therefore, learners are taken for field trips every
quarter in the Pre-primary and Primary years which helps in
experiential learning. The learners in Primary, Middle school,
secondary and higher secondary also have Edu tours and
Excursions in the course of the academic year that gives them
exposure to larger concepts, also making them independent
and confident.

 Lesson Outdoors:
An exciting change is always welcoming and the teachers take
a few sessions in the outdoor space of the school with
different activities. For example, there could be a storytelling
session in the lawn area or an art session in the mini
amphitheater on a day, which actually opens up the minds of
learners and their creativity, imaginative and literary skills
are expanded.

 Events:
Through the year, many academic and cultural events are
conducted in the outdoor spaces across grades. Our learners,
parents, and facilitators collaborate and participate in
different activities which make learning fun for all.

In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, spending quality time

outdoors in the form of a sport/game, exercising, traveling or
being one with nature is very important. Instilling the value of
it in the early years of life at school lays the foundation for a
brighter tomorrow.

Typical aims of outdoor education

 Learn how to overcome adversity
 Enhance personal and social development
 Develop a deeper relationship with nature
 Raise attainment through better teaching and learning
experiences.

Outdoor education spans the three domains of self, others, and the
natural world. The relative emphasis of these three domains varies from
one program to another. An outdoor education program can, for example,
emphasize one (or more) of these aims to:

 teach outdoor survival skills

 improve problem solving skills
 reduce recidivism
 enhance teamwork
 develop leadership skills
 understand natural environments
 promote spirituality
 provide an active, first-hand learning experience

Outdoor education is often used as a means to create a deeper sense of

place for people in a community. Sense of place is manifested through
the understanding and connection that one has with the area in which
they reside. Sense of place is an important aspect of environmentalism as
well as environmental justice because it makes the importance of
sustaining a particular ecosystem that much more personal to an
individual.

Different Branches of Outdoor Education

Environmental Education - Definition- Teaches students
how the planets physical and biological systems work, and how we can
create a more sustainable future

Environmental education teaches individuals how to weigh

various sides of an issue through critical thinking and it
enhances their own problem-solving and decision-making
skills.

Environmental education (EE) refers to organized efforts to

teach how natural environments function, and particularly,
how human beings can manage behavior
and ecosystems to live sustainably. It is a multi-disciplinary
field integrating disciplines such as biology, chemistry,
physics, ecology, earth science, atmospheric science,
mathematics, and geography. There are also ways that
environmental education is taught outside the traditional
classroom. Aquariums, zoos, parks, and nature centers all
have ways of teaching the public about the environment.

Environmental education focuses on:

1. Engaging with citizens of all demographics to;
2. Think critically, ethically, and creatively when evaluating
environmental issues;
3. Make educated judgments about those environmental issues;
4. Develop skills and a commitment to act independently and collectively
to sustain and enhance the environment; and,
5. To enhance their appreciation of the environment; resulting in positive
environmental behavioral change.

There are a few central qualities involved in environmental education

that are useful contributions to the individual.
Environmental education:

1. Enhances real-world problem solving.

2. Strengthens physical activity and diet quality.
3. Improves communication/leadership when working in groups.

Components of Environmental Education

 Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental

challenges.

 Knowledge and understanding of the environment and

environmental challenges.

 Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to

improve or maintain environmental quality

 Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges

 Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of

environmental challenges
Adventure Education
Definition- Focuses on building self-confidence and leadership
qualities through experiential and collaborative learning.

Adventure learning occurs outdoors, incorporating extreme

conditions, and online through "expedition" activities. It combines
experiential learning with decision-making, team building and the
application of real-world situations to the learning environment.
