Problem 1

The construction of a retaining wall

involves the following 5 sequential Activity Activity Name Duration (Days)
activities: excavation, formwork, A Excavation 5
reinforcement, concrete pouring, and B Formwork 8
blockwork. The wall is divided into 10 C Reinforcement 5
equal segments. The project should be D Concrete Pouring 2
completed in a 100-day period. Draw the E Blockwork 4
line of balance for this project.

Problem 1 (Solving Steps)

• Givens: if you have details for the project total duration (TL); number of units or segments (N) ; duration (D) of each activity
in 1 segment or unit.

• Solving steps are as follows:

• Draw the network diagram of the given activities for unit 1 to know unit duration (T1) and total oats (TF)
• Calculate the initial production rate of each activity (i): Rd = (N-1) / [(TL - T1) + TF]
• calculate the initial number of crews for each activity: Ci = Rd x Di
• Round up Ci to get the actual number of crews Cai
• Calculate the actual production rate: Rai = Cai/Di
• Calculate the time di erence (slope) between start/ nish of an activity in unit 1 and unit N: slope = (N-1) / Rai (round up)
• draw LOB for each activity in the form of two inclined parallel lines indicating the start and nish of each activity.
• when drawing dependent activities, the actual production rate must be compared; if Rai of an activity is greater than that of the
preceding activity; this activity must be drawn from the Unit N to the Unit 1 (top to bottom).

Problem 2 (Solving Steps)

• Givens: if you have details for the total project quantity (Q), number of units or segments (n) and production rates (Rgiven) for each
activity.
• Solving steps are as follows:
• Make sure the R is segment or unit per day; if not calculate new Rd as follows:
• Rd (segment/day) = Rgiven (quantity/day) / Segmentquantity
• Calculate durations (Di) for each activity (i) in 1 unit: Di = Segmentquantity / Rgiven = 1/ Rd
• when drawing dependent activities, the actual production rate must be compared; if Rai of an activity is greater than that of the preceding
activity; this activity must be drawn from the Unit N to the Unit 1 (top to bottom).
