Rationale:
Students have been studying pre-confederation Canadian History for the duration of the school year so far, and this
unit continues the study of pre-confederation history by exploring the power struggle between the French and British,
which ultimately led to the British gaining control of what is now Canada. The unit begins with an exploration of the
“French and Indian war” in Canada, and how the Seven Years War in Europe helped dictate events in the North
American colonies. Key events and battles during that time will be covered. Through the study of the Acadian
Deportation, students will examine the key social studies concepts of citizenship and identity. Students will study the
Battle of the Plains of Abraham, understanding why this battle was so important and how it affected the aftermath of
Canadian history. The rebellion in the 13 colonies will be studied, with an emphasis on how that affected what is now
Canada through the influx of Loyalists. Lastly, students will gain an understanding of Chief Pontiac and his role in
resisting colonial powers and trying to assert indigenous sovereignty. Students will demonstrate their understanding
of the French and Indian war through a performance task, and will have a few mid unit quizzes throughout the unit.
