Proposal for the Installation of Wireless Microwave Link

Between UM Bolton Main Campus and its

Branch in UM Matina Annex

Christian John P. Price

November 2023
I. Description of the Project or Service

The goal of this project or service is to (a) design a microwave link able

to carry data traffic not exceeding 1Gbps within in Davao City, and (b) prove

the viability of the microwave system design using key formulas specific to

microwave technology, ensuring a return on investment (ROI) within a five-year

period.

II. Market Feasibility

The University of Mindanao is one of the largest private, non-sectarian

university within Davao City. It offers more than 30 PACUCOA Accredited

Programs spread across its two campuses in Bolton St. and in Matina Crossing,

Davao City. For both campuses to function efficiently, there is a need to create

a link between campus that can provide a consistent, secure, and

instantaneous flow of data.

To tackle this issue, this project aims to establish a specialized

microwave communication connection connecting the main branch of the

University of Mindanao (UM) at Bolton St, Davao City, with its satellite location

at University of Mindanao Matina (UM) Annex at Matina Crossing, Davao City.

Through the utilization of this dedicated link, the university has the potential to

realize substantial monthly savings from leased line subscriptions while also

improving data connectivity.

The most optimal choice for a dedicated communication link between

the main campus and its satellite site is the dedicated microwave link, when

compared to the direct fiber connection. This decision is grounded in its

capacity for high-speed data transfer and cost-effectiveness, essential for

ensuring real-time data transfer within the university’s network. This is important

as any significant delay in data transmission can have a lasting effect on the

institution’s employees, students, and overall operational efficiency.

Furthermore, in contrast to direct fiber connections, a dedicated

microwave link offers fast setup, minimizing downtime and allowing the

institution to benefit from an upgraded data connection almost instantly. This

solution also provides substantial cost savings, incurring fewer initial

infrastructure costs and ongoing operating expenses. The dedicated

microwave link stands out as a fantastic choice for achieving a strong return on

investment due to its minimal physical foundation requirements.

In general, a dedicated microwave link effectively combines the

necessary characteristics of quick installation, speed, security, and affordability.

For the university's communication needs, this solution emerges as the most

advantageous alternative, perfectly aligning with the university's vision for

consistent, secure, and real-time data transfer.

III. Technical Consideration

This section of the study delves into the technical aspects of the

proposed microwave link project connecting the University of Mindanao

Bonifacio Campus to the University of Mindanao Matina Campus. The

proponent’s chosen solution for this project is the Ubiquiti Networks'AirFiber-5,

an advanced wireless microwave antenna system known for its reliability and

high-performance capabilities.

In the next section, we will provide a brief description of the AirFiber-5,

discuss the ideal and realistic operating frequency for the link, and recommend

the appropriate antenna height when installed at the top of the highest point of

each building.

Microwave Antenna
Fig 1. AirFiber 5

The antenna chosen by the proponent is the Ubiquiti Networks AirFiber-

5 wireless point to point communication system. It is an antenna designed for

high-capacity data transmission. Its outstanding performance is achieved by

utilizing advanced microwave technology, which makes it the perfect option for

establishing network communication between faraway locations. The AirFiber-

5 is an effective network that can withstand a variety of environmental

conditions and can deliver data at gigabit-per-second speeds. Its engineering

meets the demands of modern communication networks and ensures secure,

fast, and reliable data transmission.

The operating frequency of the microwave link is the 5Ghz spectrum,

specifically 5.65Ghz. For this project this microwave link is more ideal and

realistic to use since the frequency is practical in terms of cost and requirement.

The 5 GHz spectrum provides a balanced compromise between propagation

properties and data throughput. It offers adequate bandwidth with sufficient

resistance to interference to enable 1Gbps data speeds, which is essential for

a dependable and steady connection.

Fig. 2. Distance of the Microwave Link

Figure 2 shows the direct distance between two points, the first point

located at UM Bolton while the second located at UM Matina. The distance is

shown to be approximately 1,432 meters or 1.432 Kilometers. which is within

the suggested microwave link distance for the antenna. To optimize the

AirFiber-5's performance and guarantee a line of sight (LOS) between the two

locations, it is advised to mount the microwave antennas at the highest point of

the building between the two endpoints of every structure. The right antenna

height is determined by factors such as the structure's elevation, clearance of

the Fresnel zone, and adjacent obstructions. In most cases, a height of 1.5

meter or so for each microwave antenna transceiver would be ideal to establish

the link.

Establishment of Line-of-Sight (LOS) for the Microwave Link

Maintaining a clear Line-of-Sight (LOS) link between the transmitter and

receiver antennas is essential for the successful implementation of any

microwave link. A continuous and unobstructed LOS link is crucial for ensuring

the dependable and high-performance operation of the microwave connection.

In this context, we will delve into the significance of LOS link and explore factors

that needs to be considered when establishing it for the proposed microwave

link. Figure 3 and 4 shows the proposed LOS link between the two campuses

viewed in two different perspectives.

Fig. 3. Line-of-sight (LOS) path of the Link Via Google Earth

Fig. 4. LOS Point-of-View of the Path

Elevation, Terrain, and Obstacles

As was previously mentioned in this paper, placing the microwave

antennas at each building's highest point aids in ensuring LOS link. This

is to ensure that any potential obstructions, such as trees, buildings, or

other structures, would not obstruct the LOS link path of the two

antennas.
Fig. 5 Elevation Profile of the Path

Figure 5 shows the elevation profile of the LOS link path. As

observed, there are multiple spikes of elevation. The recorded peak

point is at 34 meters, while the recorded minimum elevation point is

between 29 to 33 meters. The elevation profile of the route indicates

that it is feasible to install a microwave link between the two buildings.

This does not consider however, the various potential natural and

artificial obstacles that might impede the LOS link. As such a

comprehensive survey is conducted to obtain the possible obstructions

present in the proposed link. The result of the survey is summarized in

Table 1 below.

Conclusion

This comprehensive feasibility study is conducted for the implementation

of a microwave link connecting the University of Mindanao - Bolton Campus

and University of Mindanao - Matina Campus. Within this paper is a detailed

analysis of both technical and market considerations focused on achieving

high-speed data transmission surpassing 1Gbps. This study underwent

meticulous evaluation encompassing line and gain calculations, as well as

various critical parameters.

The output data, which includes loss and gain calculations, affirms the

technical viability of the proposed microwave link. Despite some attenuation

factors, the total losses remain within acceptable limits, and a calculated Fade

Margin ensures consistent and reliable performance. Gain Calculations reveal

positive results, showcasing a new Fade Margin that provides a substantial

margin of safety.

Importantly, the project's resilience is highlighted by the reliability factor,

which stands impressively at 99.9999941%. This incredibly high degree of

dependability guarantees the University's essential communication

requirements, including High-speed Internet Access, Administrative Data

Transfer, Secure Data Transfer, and Real-Time Data Transfer, are met.

Strong economic viability is indicated by the breakeven threshold of

46.18, which is significantly lower than the performance levels attained. This

indicates that the project's economic viability is established by the expectation

of a return on investment (ROI) within the suggested 5-year term.

In conclusion, the proposed microwave link, utilizing Ubiquiti Networks'

AirFiber-5, is poised to deliver a state-of-the-art, high-performance data

connection. It not only meets but significantly exceeds the desired data

transmission speeds, offering a reliable, secure, and economically feasible

solution that will enhance the University's operational efficiency and academic

experience.
