that could be included on a unit test.

Lesson 8.0
Prerequisite Skills

Learning Goal:
Today I will review skills necessary for success in the current unit.

Catholic Graduate Expectation:

Today I will think reflectively and creatively to evaluate situations and
solve problems.

Power Functions

Recall: A power function is a polynomial function of the form f(x)=axn, where

a≠0 and n is a positive integer.

Example 1: Graph the following odd-degree power functions on the grid below.
State the domain and range of each function.
a) y = x b) y = x3 c) y = -2x3

Even and Odd Functions

Recall: Even functions have line symmetry about the y-axis and
Odd functions have point symmetry about the origin (0,0).

Example 3: Graph y = sinx and y = cosx in the interval x ∈ [-2π, 2π]

Example 4: Looking at all the functions graphed in examples 1-3, state which
functions are even and which functions are odd. Write even or odd beside each
of the graphs.

Rational Functions

Recall: A rational function is a function of the form

where g(x) and h(x) are polynomials and h(x)≠0

Example 5: For each of the following rational functions, determine the

equations of any asymptotes, the x- and y-intercepts, the domain and range,
and then sketch a graph.

Inverse Functions

Recall: To determine the inverse equation, switch the x and y, then solve for y.

Example 7: Find the inverse of each function. Then state whether the inverse is
a function.

a) y = 2x - 5 b) y = (x - 3)2 + 4 c) d)
