Nonrestrictive Modifiers Are Added
to Clauses

The relative clauses, participial phrases, and

other structures de- scribed in this chapter are
not bound within phrases but are added to
clauses, almost parenthetically. These added
constituents are called NONRESTRICTIVE
MODIFIERS. Because they are not bound within
phrases, nonrestrictive modifiers are set off
from the core sentence con- stituents by
punctuation marks that indicate their
parenthetical nature: commas, dashes, colons, or
parentheses.
nonrestrictie modifiers can often be moved to different
locations in a sentence: they can be placed at the end or
NONRESTRICTIVE beginning of a main clause or sometimes even within
the main clause, separating the subject from the
MODIFIERS ARE NOT predicate Here is a nonrestrictive prepositional phrase
BOUND WITHIN PHRASES placed first at the begin- ning of a sentence, then
between the subject and the predicate, and fi- nally at
the end of the sentence:
EXAMPLE
01 02 03

Except for fools and Everyone, except for fools Everyone knows nuclear
lunatics, everyone knows and lunatics, knows nuclear war would be
nuclear war would be war would catastrophic-except for
catastrophic. be catastrophic. fools and lunatics.
FEATURES OF
ADDING MODIFIERS
TO SENTENCES:

1. how to distinguish it by looking

at the "comma", "colon", "strip"
and "brackets
2. is additional in nature, and is
not bound by other sentences.
Several ways to make Adding
Modifiers to sentences:
1. Modifiers use relative clauses for example:No
entertainer brought more joy to filmgoers than
Fred Astaire.

who
Fred Astaire turned energy, dignity, and wit into
pure dance.

No entertainer brought more joy to filmgoers

than Fred Astaire, who turned energy, dignity, and
wit into pure dance.
2.Modifiers made with participial phrases
(present or past participle) for example:
Steinbeck produced The Grapes of Wrath in five months.
Steinbeek was writing in longhand.

Steinbeck produced The Grapes of Wrath in five months, writing

inlonghand.
OR
Steinbeck, writing in longhand, produced The Grapes of Wrath in five
months.
OR
Writing in longhand, Steinbeck produced The Grapes of Wath in five
months.
3. The modifier is in the form of an
appositive, made using a noun phrase.
It works the same way as an adjective, so it explains the
noun.
For example:
where the candidate's wife tells us who Juliana is:
Next, the reporters questioned Juliana.
Juliana is the candidate's wife.

Next, the reporters questioned Juliana, the candidate's

wife.
4. Make modifiers using adverb clauses.

For example: Stephen King became :

celebrity after he published Carrie.
(Adverb of time)

OR
After he published Carrie, Stephen King
became a celebrity. OR

Stephen King, after he published Carrie,

became a celebrity.
