Question One
List key examples of guided transmission media

 Twisted pair
 Coaxial cable
 Fibre Optics

Question Two
For each example provided, give the pros and cons for the media
1. Twisted pair
Pros of Twisted pair
 Twisted to reduce interference with adjacent twisted-pair cables.
 Low cost
 Can carry analog and digital signals
 Easy to implement and terminate
 Low weight
 Flexible
 Easy to connect
Cons of Twisted pair
 High signal attenuation
 Low bandwidth
 Low security
 Thin and so easy to break
 Low durability as they require regular maintenance
 Susceptible to electromagnetic interference

2. Coaxial cable
Pros of Coaxial cable
 Less susceptible to electromagnetic interference than twisted pair
 High bandwidth, higher than that of twisted pair
 Good noise immunity
 Flexible
 High capacity
 Great durability
 Can be used in both analog and digital data transmission
Cons of coaxial cable
 Bulky
 Expensive to install for long distances
 Low security as it is easy to tap from

3. Fibre Optics
Pros of fibre optics
 Resistant to electromagnetic interference
 High information security
 Extremely high bandwidth
 Light in weight
 High capacity
 Low signal attenuation
 Long lifespan
Cons of fibre optics
 Delicate system
 Expensive to install
 Propagate light in only one direction

Question Three
Provide 1-2 scenarios of when/where one would typically use each of the listed media
1. Twisted pair
 A Twisted pair cable is used for connecting switches, routers, printers, IP cameras,
etc in a local Area Network.
 They are used in Ethernet cables
 They are used in security camera systems

2. Coaxial cables
 Coaxial cables are used to connect TV systems to antennas
 They are used in telephone connections
 They are used by internet providers to convey data, video, and voice
communications to customers.

3. Fibre optics
 Fibre optics are used in fibre-optic communications where they permit transmission
over long distances at higher bandwidths than wire cables.
 They are used in areas where there is high electromagnetic interference
 They are used for medical applications to view internal body organs without having
to perform surgery.
