Borazine or Borazole

Chemical properties:
1.Addition reactions: one molecule of borazine adds 3 molecules of HCl or HBr in cold
without a catalyst. These molecules gets attached with all the three B atoms of borazine
, since B-N or B=N bonds and hydrogen chloride derivative is obtained . This addition
reaction is not shown by benzene.

2.Hydrolysis : Borazine gets slowly hydrolysed by water to prouce boric acid, ammonia
and hydrogen.hydrolysis is favoured by the increase in temperature
3.pyrolysis: when borazine is pyrolysed above 340 degree C, B6N6H10 and B5N5H8 are
produced . These products are boron-nitrogen analogues of diphenyl and
napthalene respectively.

4.Formation of adduct: borazine forms adduct with CH3OH. This adduct undergoes
pyrolysis with elimunation of H2 and gives B-trimethoxy borazine.
5. Reaction with aniline: Borazine undergoes a strong exothermic reaction
with aniline to produce tri-aminoborine
phosphazenes
Preparation:
uses
• Phosphazene derivatives are used as fire retardants
• Some phosphazene derivatives act as catalysts in organic synthesis
• Phosphazene compounds find application as additives in the
production of flame resistant polymer plastics
• Some phosphazene compounds are employed as lubricants and
lubricant additives
• Phosphazene derivatives can function as corrosion inhibitors,
protecting metal surface from corrosion.
S4N4 ( tetrasulphur tetranitride)
It is a inorganic compound with formula S4N4 . It was first
prepared by M.Gregory in the year 1835.it gas a complex
cradle like structure (derivative of 8-membered ring) with
alternating S and N atoms.

In the S4N4 ring, te sulphur and nitrogen atoms are interconnected by single
covalent bonds . Each sulphur atom is bonded to two nitrogen atom and one
other sulphur atom. Similarly each nitrogen atom is covalantly bonded to two
sulphur atom and one other nitrogen atom . This structure contributes to the
compounds physical and chemical properties including stability and reactivity in
various reactions
prepration
1. Tetra sulpur tetra nitrude can ce prepared through the reaction of sulphur
dichloride(S2Cl2) with ammonia (NH3) the reaction can be represented as
follows
S2Cl2 +4NH3 S4N4 + 2NH3

2.Tetrasulphur tetranitride can be synthesized by reacting

elemental sulphur (S8) with nitrogen oxide,NO under specific
conditions the reaction proceeds as follows
2S8 + 4NO 4S4N4 +O2

this method typically reuires elevated temperature and careful

control of reaction conditions.
• 3.Another method for preparation of tetra sulphur tetra
nitride involves the reaction of phosphorous penta sulphide
(P2S5) with ammonia.
P2S5 + 8NH3 2S4N4 + 5NH4HS
Resulting tetra sulphur tetra nitride can be isolated through
appropriate purification method.

4.Additionally tetrasulphur tetranitride can be prepared from the

reaction of sulphur dichloride(SCl2) with potassium azide(KN3)
2SCl2 + KN3 S4N4 + 5KCl + 2N2
uses
1. Tetra sulphur tetra nitride as been investigated for Its
potential use as a high energy material in propellants and
explosives due to its high nitrogen content.
2. It is used as a reagent in synthetic chemistry reactions ,
particularly in the synthesis of nitrogen containing
compounds.
3. Tetra sulphur tetra nitride may also find applications in areas
such as material science, coordination chemistry and as a
precursor to sulphur containing compounds.
(SN)x sulphur nitrogen polymers

• Sulphur nitride polymers also called polythiazyl typically have

polymeric structure , with sulphur and nitrogen atoms
forming long chains or networks interconnected by covalant
bonds. The arrangement of atoms in the polymer backbone
may vary leading to different structural motifs and properties.
preparation
1. Polythiazyl is synthesized by the polymerization of the cyclic formal
dimer disulfur dinitride (S2N2), which is in turn synthesized from the
formal tetramer tetrasulfur tetranitride (S4N4), in the presence of
hot silver wool
S4N4 + 8 Ag → 4 Ag2S + 2 N2
S4N4 (low-pressure gas at 250-300 °C; Ag2S catalyst) → 2 S2N2 (gas) →
2 S2N2 (stable solid at 77 K)
When warmed to room temperature, the additional heat induces
spontaneous polymerization:
S2N2 (0 °C) → (SN)x
2.polythiazyl can also be synthesized under high-pressure conditions, where
nitrogen gas and sulphur reactants are subjected to elevated pressures.
High-pressure techniques can help promote the formation of polythiazyl
by overcoming kinetic barriers to reaction.
3.Plasma discharge techniques have been explored for the synthesis of
polythiazyl by subjecting nitrogen and sulphur-containing precursors to
electrical discharges. Plasma discharges can generate highly reactive
species that facilitate the formation of polythiazyl.
uses
• Sulphur nitride polymers can serve as catalyst or
catalyst support in various chemical reactions.
• These polymers have potential application in gas
separation membranes and gas sensing devices due
to their selective permeation properties and
sensitivity to certain gases.
• These compounds are being explored for use in
energy storage and conversion devices suchh as
batteries, super capacitors, and fuel cells due to their
unique electronic and electrochemical properties
