Lesson 2 Rounding Off Whole Numbers to the Nearest Thousands and Millions
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to

 Accurately round numbers to the nearest hundred thousand and million; and
 Correctly write numbers rounded to the nearest hundred thousand and million.

Let’s Build Your Understanding

Look at the table below to see how numbers are rounded off to the nearest place value.

Round up

To round off a number to a particular place value, look at the digit to the right of the place value to
be rounded off. If it is less than 5, round down by retaining the digit in the place value. If is 5 or more,
round up by adding 1 to the digit in the place value.

Let’s Say
To round off to the nearest ten, look for one’s place. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, retain the tens digit. On the
other hand, if the ones digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add 1 to the tens digit. Make the one’s place 0.

Lesson 2 Rounding Off Whole Numbers to the Nearest Thousands and Millions pg. 2
To round off to the nearest thousand, look for the hundreds place. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, retain the thousands digit.
On the other hand, if the hundreds digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add 1 to the thousands digit. Make the hundreds, tens, and
one’s place 0.

To round off to the nearest million, look for the hundred thousand place, if it is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, retain
the millions digit. On the other hand, if the hundred thousand digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add 1 to the millions
digit. Make the hundred thousands to one’s place 0.

Activity 2
A. Identify and express the numbers about our planet Earth in number word and round them off to
the indicated place value.

Aside from being the largest and densest of the inner planets and the only place where life is
known to exist, the Earth is the only planet known to have current geological activity. Its liquid
hydrosphere is unique among the terrestrial planets. The polar diameter of the Earth is 12 713
kilometers. Its polar circumference is 40 008 kilometers. Its surface area 510 066 000 kilometers. The
land area is 148 429 000 square kilometers and the sea area is 361 637 000 square kilometers. The
Earth’s distance from the moon is 385 000 kilometers.
