Assignment 1: Teaching Methods

As a qualified ESL teacher, I would make use of the Suggestopedia and CLT method. I
chose suggestopedia because a lot of learners, potentially learners who have to learn a
language that is completely foreign to them, may experience nervousness or learning
anxiety. This method allows me to engage with them in games, songs or puzzles. These
kinds of approaches put the learners at ease and it is also very enjoyable and fun for them.

I also chose the CLT method because it's a form of communicative teaching and there's
nothing better than communication/interaction for visual, active learners who work better in
an environment where physical activities aid in helping them better understand what they are
being taught.

Overall, I would use the CLT method if I had to pick one because you can get everybody in
the classroom to engage and participate in helping one another learn efficiently without
getting bored or feeling isolated with their books. CLT assists in helping students build strong
communicative skills as well as build fluency.

I remember being predominantly taught with the lecturer role during primary school. It is a
very outdated and boring way of being taught because learning is not black and white for
every student and some may struggle to process mass information a lot harder than other
students. Some of us are more creative while others may be mathematically inclined and
thus making it a priority to shake things up in the classroom so that everybody feels like they
are learning at the same pace.

With different subjects came the possibility of getting taught multiple ways but during high
school it was also predominantly the lecturer role but I can say I remember being taught by
the CLT role as well and that was definitely a form of teaching that resonated with me a bit
more. I say so because actively communicating amongst my classmates and dabbling in
visual aid was always a form of teaching I worked well under due to being more of an active,
visual learner, however, it was on rare occasions I ever got taught that way depending on the
subject I'm being taught.
